remove your drivers package for your printer, and disconnect it from your computer, re install the drivers with the install disk included in your printer when you bought it, or from the dell web site, after you re install the drivers software pack, plug the printer back into the computer and turn it on and follow the installation screens, this should resolve your issue, if not I suggest you have the unit looked at by a tech.
You can download the drivers from Dell's support pages for some OS's (I see a WinXP, Vista 32-bit and Win2K.) If your new computer came with Win7, you may not have much luck unless you use a work-around. Dell's site indicates that the Vista driver doesn't work in Win7. You can try the compatability mode to install the driver (download, extract the files to a new folder, find the .exe file and right click on it. Choose Properties and then the Compatability tab. Check the box for Run as and choose the correct OS version. Then right click again and choose Run as administrator.) Alternatively, Win7 Pro and Ultimate can run a virtual XP computer (on some computers). It takes two downloads and installation of the programs from Microsoft. Then install the printer using the XP driver from Dell. The drivers are available here: (long URL) http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=WLH&catid=-1&dateid=-1&impid=-1&osl=EN&typeid=-1&formatid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=PRN_ALL_A924&hidos=WW1&hidlang=en&TabIndex=&scanSupported=False&scanConsent=False
In Windows, how do I install my printer?
Most new printers, especially USB printers, come with installer programs. If you have neither installation instructions nor an installation program, you can use one of the following procedures to install most printers:
USB printers (Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP only)
Make sure that the USB cable is unplugged from your computer and your printer. USB devices work differently from older devices and usually need to have the drivers installed before you connect the device.
If you have an installation disk, insert it into the drive. If there is an installer provided, it should run or be executed here. Follow its instructions, and it should take care of installing your printer in a few moments.
If you don't have an installation program, plug the USB cable into your computer and your printer. This should trigger the Add New Hardware Wizard.
Click Next, and then select Search for the best driver for your device. Click Next.
Uncheck all options except Specify a Location. Click Browse. Browse to the disk, CD, or directory where your printer drivers are located. Click OK, and then click Next twice.
Note: You can download some drivers from the web. Consult the web site of your printer's manufacturer, or see Where can I find driver updates for my Windows computer?
When all the files are copied, click Finish.
Turn on your printer. Windows should detect the printer's presence and finish the installation. If the option to print a test page is offered, do so. This will confirm the installation. Click Finish.
how do i install my printer onto my new computer if i lost the installation disk or cd rom? I've lost the installation disk for mu Canon PIXMA iP4000. How can I download for free to reinstall? Thanks.....George
Go into Control Panel and complete the Scanner Wizard provided by Windows XP, then try scanning pictures or documents again. If you have the disk to the printer/scanner autorun the installation again. It will just overwrite the old install, not a big deal. If you do not have the disk, look online for the "free installation disk Dell A940 Printer/Scanner" and run from this free website. Let me know how it goes.
