Lacie by stark external hard drive is suddenly not recognised by my computer (always worked until now) and has a permanent red light. Tried all usb ports and restarting computer. Whats wrong?

have you dropped it? it could be any number of disc errors, two of the most common errors are caused by viruses and dropping. try putting the hard drive in the freezer for a day or so in a moisture and static resistant bag. just a possibly remedy, if that doesn't work, try removing the casing on the hd and setting it as a secondary drive after you plug it inside a desktop computer.

Open the external hard drive cover, remove the hard disk inside, and fix it back. Try again and let's see what happens.

If it still does not work, insert the external drive into the computer, feel the hard drive if it spins/vibrate from inside or if it makes a cracking noise.

If it spins/vibrate, it means the hard disk is still working. In that case, you have to get another external drive case/cover.

But if it makes cracking noise, then it means the hard drive is damaged and you need to get another one.

I wish you all the best.

When my lacie external hard drive is connected,my

Check your BIOS > StartUp sequence
Maybe the USB boot option has much higher priority that HDD boot. Try exchanging their priority and then reboot, with your external HD connected to pc.

XP doesn't recognize 500GB external Lacie after almost 2 years

try it on different usb ports on your system
try replacing the cable which connects the hard drive with the usb port
if this does not works the problem lies in the portable hard drive and i think it would be under warranty period so get it checked

I have a Lacie 500gb

Clicking noise is indicative of hardware failure. You could of course try a different computer, but chances are it's a goner. With hardware failure, the only way I know of rescuing data, is sending it to a data rescue company. Expensive. Which is why you need a minimum of two copies of everything you plan to keep..

Computer doesn't recognize my Lacie HD

From your description it sounds like you power adapter did indeed fail at first, but if the HDD spins now the adapter seems to be working fine at the moment. If the hdd is in device manager, than at least you can use carving tools like photorec to pull your files out, even if the filesystem is corrupt. If you want somebody else to do it for you you can check Data Recovery NYC. Otherwise is a great source for tools and knowledge on how to do it yoruself.

Lacie ext HD 500gb turns on but doesnt read

If the spinning sound is not clean anymore there is damage to the hard drive and I doubt it will be easy to get the data out. If the drive still shows up in the disk management you can try to access it with a tool like ddrescue and then run photorec on the created image. If you want somebody else to do it for you there is Data Recovery NYC. Also there is good informaation on hard drive repairs on

Lacie 500gb external drive

The disks inside the HD are not spining. The creaking noise is the HD trying to start. Next time when it does start transfer all the files ASAP cause your drive is about to die.
