Most of these sets used a mechanical RELAY---it is located somewhere near where the power cord connects to the circuit board---it will be black and rectangular about 3/4 of a inch tall and just over 1 inch wide(black in color with printing on top like TV-5-----12vdc etc)
I bet you are hearing the relay click on and off---A LOT OF THESE SETS HAD PROBLEMS WHERE ONE OF THE 4 PINS THAT HOLD THE RELAY IN BREAK LOOSE WHERE THEY ARE SOLDERED TO THE BOTTOM OF THE BOARD----two pins on one end will be side by side and the two at the other end will be slightly diagonal in position.
If you can unplug the set and get the back off--the entire board should slide out so you can turn it over and look at the solder connections----do not be surprised if one or more of them looks loose or badly soldered
If you see this all you have to do is resolder all four and put the set back together----in some sets you may have to unplug the speakers from the main board to get enough room to turn the board over.
Let me know if you have any questions--I am here to help.
