Question about GE 5803P Multi-disc DVD Player

1 Answer

I have a Sylvania SRDV495 DVD/VHS combo recorder (-R/-RW) it will not let me record to or from any Dvd higher than 2x4.7 gb yet the manual says it should as long as it is -R/-RW disc.

Whenever I insert a disc that is 4x 4.7gb I get the disc error message that this disc may not have the playback capabilites. It will not let me record to it. What is the difference between the discs? 2x4.7gb and 4x4.7gb? I am lost with all these different numbers and what they mean.

Re: I have a Sylvania SRDV495 DVD/VHS combo recorder...

It could be the color on the surface of the disc.Try using a differnt type of dvd disc. There is also a different types of burnable dvds. there dvdr and dvd rom make sure your using the correct one. The differance is the burn speeds. 4times is fast. check your users manual which sould be on to see what the player requires. See if that helps if not get back to me.

Your combo device will accept all bands of recordable DVD but only the minus R or minus RW not the plus R nor the plus RW I've had great success using Staples brand of DVD-R/RW and is usually very competitively priced if its in stock but I've found that Maxcell & JVC brand are often on sale at some of the major big box MEGA stores nationwide that is also an awesome and reliable disc that I use and can recommend

Why won't the DVD-RW disks FORMAT? I've seen others with the same problem with formatting multiple types of disks... Please help.

If you are using a Sylvania DV220SL8 DVD Player \ VCR combo (which this question is posted under the heading of) there is a very simple reason why you can't format DVD-RW disks. DVD Players can't do that. You need a DVD Recorder to format DVD's.

This applies to all comments under this heading as well. You can not record if the unit you're using does not have that capability. And this unit does not have it. You can record with the VHS VCR, but the DVD Player is just that... A Player. It's not a Recorder.

Can you tell me some specific Brands of DVD-R or DVD-RW blank disks? I have tried several and cannot find many that will work with my Sylvania SRDV495.

There are no specific brands, however Verbatim are widely considered the best. Your, problem, however, is unlikely the brand of the media and more likely the recording speed of the media. Most blank DVD's on the market are 16x or faster and your machine (c. 2005) doesn't support anything faster than 4x. When I was reading the manual it referred to the "state of the art" 8x discs that the machine didn't have the ability to support. The discs you need are available and often are labeled as 2x - 4x meaning that they will support any drives that burn at a 2x - 4x spin rate. Also, be sure that you are not purchasing DVD+R and DVD+RW as they are not compatible with your unit.

I have a dvr4400

Most DVD recorders use DVD-R, some also use DVD-RW. Newer ones use the +R and DVD-RAM formats.

But for the maximum compatibility, you should use DVD-R.

Recording dvd from vhs

you may not need a remote to dub a vhs tape to dvd.
look on the front of the recorder. see if there is a arrow showing dubbing vhs to dvd/ dvd to vhs. since you do not have the manual, you'll probably have to play around with it a while to figure it out. you will also need to know which format the dvd will record on. [dvd-r,dvd-rw,dvd+r,dvd+rw or ram] you can look up your recorder brand & model # online, then search for a manual you can download.
good luck.

Sylvania dvr90vf dvd recorder

Unfortunately without a firmware upgrade the only disks you can use are DVD-R or DVD-RW. The tricky part is that you can ONLY USE 2X speed. Per my conversation with Sylvania there is a firmware update that will allow you to use up to 8x disks, but they are charging $17.00 for it.

Sylvania SRDV495 DVD-VHS

I have the same unit, a SRDv495 and have also been having
a bad time getting dvd's that will work in my machine. I also
bought mine from Sears. I have found one that works every
time and that is a MAXWELL DVD-RW. The trick I think is
the speed of the DVD, so you need to use the ones that have
Up to Max 2X, 4.7 GBgo, 2 Hrs. I find these work every time.
Hope this helps.

HELP! I can't figure out how to Connect my Sylvania DVD/VCR Combo to my older TV

Even if you do get it connected you cannot copy from vhs to dvd as you have bought a vcr recorder with dvd player, not a dvd recorder. You can only record to the vcr tape from a dvd, in the players controls.
