The front comes off. There are clips on the bottom and flat pegs on the top of the panel. Take a putty knife and slide it between the top and front. Pry down and the top of the panel will pull out. Make sure you don't pull wires loose from door switch when you get it un-clipped. Once you are into the unit, you will most likely find that the thermal fuse is blown. If so you will also need to replace the cycling thermostat. When it goes bad, it puts the thermal fuse out. What you smelt was the dryer getting to hot because the thermostat went bad so it by passed the thermostat and got so hot that the thermal fuse was blown. This is the way the unit is designed to work when the thermostat goes bad. The thermal fuse is a safety.
