Problems with finding a server

Hello there, first let me thank you in advance for your help. my problem is i've had this computer for right at 2 years and have only been able to use it maybe 20 times. Most days it wont connect due to "not being able to find a server" I so needed this computer for school, but have been frustrated these past few years. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated as i really would love to use my computer daily.
