TomTom One XL - Won't Boot Up after Updates

I just got a TomTom One XL for Christmas. It worked out of the box, but after I performed the latest updates, it does not work. The updates went through without a problem (used TomTom Home). Now when I turn it on, it just sits at the TomTom splash screen. Of course I did not do a backup before performing these updates. On TomTom's website, I looked for some sort of system restore download, but I could not find anything.

Any suggestions out there?

    Tom Tom emailed me back some troubleshooting procedures to try out, and the following worked:

    - connect your unit to the computer using the USB cable and turn the unit on
    - open TomTom Home software
    - click on remove items form my device
    - select the application and remove it
    - safely disconnect ( device > disconnect device )
    - take the USB cable out of the unit and turn it off
    - plug the USB cable back in and turn the unit back on
    - bring up TomTom Home and click on download your updates

    If there is no application in as an update do this.

    - click on add maps, traffic, voices etc.
    - click on items on my computer
    - select the application and add it
    - safely disconnect ( device > disconnect device )
    - take
    USB cable out of unit and let it boot up normally. Do not turn off.

    i just purchased my tomtom one xl. after charging for a few hours, i turned it on. it wouldnt work, it just showed the tomtom splash screen and then it turned off or it's in sleep mode. i tried it several times and the same thing happened. i already installed the software in my pc. whenever i connect the device to my pc using the provided usb cable, i can view the pre-installed content in the tomtom that i cant view in the device's touchscreen. also, whenever i try to click the "My ONE XL", it always asks me to disconnect the usb from the pc. and whenever i do that, it asks me to connect the usb once again. but still, nothing happens.i already tried to "reset" the device but still nothing.  i dont know what to do anymore. should i try to update the device or the software??

I have managed to solve the problem of loading a new map on my Go700 using a Mac. I discovered that Tomtom is incompatible with the Leopad operaying system, despite the protestations of the idiots at Tomtom ,so I reverted to an older Mac using Tiger.
Taking the instructions given to crinold, I tried to erase the disc on the 700 using home 1.5 - and it didn't work. So I went to disc utilities, highlighted and erased the Tomtom disc, and opened home 2,5. After being refused entry several times, like being told to load an already loaded device, I persevered, and managed, slowly, to add the map I had bought for 78 euros. T]One point oif interes is that when I bought the map, they site stated it would cost 63 pounds sterling, but switched it to euros when the invoice arrived. at a rate very favourable to Tomtom - funny, that.
This is sharp practice,probably illegal in many countries,, but, to be honest, dealing with the mysterious Tomtom company is so frustrating, that I don't have the time or inclination to fight them for the money they cheated from me.
How they survive with such an awful product and extremely bad after sales service is hard to understand - perhaps they won't ... we live in hope.

Sorry wrong Question.......I'm really frustrated right now. I have a TOMtom XL 30 Series that will now show nothing but a Big Red X when I plug it into my Truck.....HELP !!!!!

It is quite common tomtom bug.
Do: 1. backup restore or 2. copy all original SD files to your new formated SD card. Restart TomTom and see if it works.

Yes, you can get SOME updates for free... indefinetely.

You will need the latest version of TomTom Home software, available for free from

Install the software on your computer BEFORE connecting the TomTom GPC to the USB port of the computer.

The free updates you can get are:

1) "QuickFix" updates. This contains the global positions of GPS satellites, allowing the TomTom GPS to get a faster lock on the GPS satellites (the GPS will get a lock within 5-10 seconds of being turned on, instead of 2-5 minutes on some other GPS brands). It is suggested that you update the QuickFix at least once a week. If you don't do it often, the GPS will just take longer to find the GPS satellites, that's all.

2) Minor updates to your map(s), but only the ones submitted by other TomTom users.

3) Updates to POIs (Points of Interest), such as new stores, malls, gas stations, parking lots, etc.

Whole-map updates ARE NOT FREE

Downloading updates

Firstly, to get the latest updates for your new toy, download tomtom home, once you have done this, connect your unit to your computer, and updates are normally automatic, For your second question go to change preferences and look for places of interest (POI) and there be a big list for you to choose from

When I turn on my TomTom XL One it never receives a GPS signal

connect tomtom to pc and get latest updates. it needs new information about satelites. after this it will receive signals very good.

Not recieving any satelites

you need to update your tomtom with the latest GPSfix updates. This can be done by connecting your tomtom to a pc/laptop via usb and using the tomtom home software that came with your device or downloading it from the tomtom website

Sorry to tell you that but you are dreaming if you think you can get free maps!!!!!.....i did too!, unless you get a boot image (or backup image) of another device...updated of course and load it on your device. TomTom is one of the rare site where you don`t have to fight or struggle to get map updates (unlike MIO which barely provide support) but you have to spend $
, i did buy a one year update service at about 50$, it is fast easy and....stress free especially if you need your device for your work.
