Question about Kenwood KAC-X401M Car Audio Amplifier

No amp for cd or usb

I just wired the radio up and I have an amp with two subwoofers. The amp will turn on and work fine for the tuner but when I use a cd or plug my ipod in, the amp will not come on. I have read the manual and checked all the wires but still don't know what is wrong.

Re: no amp for cd or usb

This is generally caused by using the wrong switched output. If the head unit has both a power antenna control output AND an amp control output, you need to use the amp control output to feed the remote turn-on input on the amp. On head units that have both types of outputs, the power antenna output goes off when you switch from radio to a source that doesn't need the antenna.

I get sound with radio but not with cd or USB, even though the display says they are working (cdx-gt590ui)

use the blue/white wire to turn your amplifier on. the blue wire is antenna remote turn on, the blue/white is amplifier remote turn on.
when the radio is not in tuner mode the blue wire turns off.

Amplifier turns on but not the subwoofer?

Hello thedj3214,

You can find the color codes for a 1999 Buick Regal here. There is no dedicated amp remote wire. Neither is there a power antenna wire.

You could use the 12V "switched lead (yellow) from the radio or any switched 12V lead directly from the vehicle fuse box. I'd wire it through a dash mounted toggle switch so as to be able to turn the amp on and off manually.

The Sony 2150GSX is a 2-channel amp with the speaker terminals on either side. You do not want to ground the subwoofer itself, only the ground terminal should be connected to bare metal on the vehicle chassis or body as close to the amp as possible. The ground wire does not need to be run to the negative battery terminal.

A ground on one of the speaker leads will probably cause the amp not to power up. A ground on a speaker wire usually activates the amps protection circuit, causing it to not operate until the fault is corrected.

Hope this helps.

My amp is working fine but turns off when i insert a CD

Hello pumpin_up_da,

The most likely cause for the problem you describe is that the remote turn-on lead to the amp is functional only when the head unit is operating in tuner mode. This could be caused by using a power antenna lead instead of a remote lead. Some head units have both, some only one or the other. Check the wire going to the amp remote terminal with a voltmeter. If it shows 12V when the radio is operated in tuner mode but 0V when you switch to CD, then check the wiring. If this is the cause, and your head unit has a dedicated amp turn-on lead, then connect it to the amp terminal. Most head units that have both power antenna and remote leads code them "Blue" and "Blue/White". If your head unit does not have an amp turn-on lead, you need to wire it to a 12V switched source, usually the "red" wire on most aftermarket receivers. You can then put a SPST toggle switch (available at Radio Shack or most auto parts stores) in line with the wire and turn it on and off as desired.

If the correct wire from your head unit is currently connected, then the receiver is defective and needs repair or replacement. Or, if everything else still functions normally, and really don't want to bother with repair or replacement, you can still use the 12V switched source as described above.

Hope this helps.

Amp shuts off when switched from radio to cd

your amps rem wire is hooked to the power antenna wire on your head unit and so when you turn off the radio you would nolonger need an antenna so it powers down and would lower the antenna.Depending on the head unit you should have one output for the power antenna and one for the amp rem......If your head unit doesn't have the rem output you can wire it to the switched wire that powers your head unit but keep in mind the amp will stay on while you have the key in acc or run position even if your head unit is off.
hope this helps!

Amp works but no sound from sub

Some older Pioneer radios require you to connect the Subwoofer RCA to the rear output on the back of the radio and then you have to turn on the subwoofer in the menu on the radio. What model Pioneer radio is it? Also, make sure that the RCA plugged into the amp is on the input side, not the output side.

My amp only powers the subwoofer when the radio is on but wont when the cd player is on

The person(s) who hooked up your system made a boo boo. They wired your remote turn on lead to the power antenna lead instead of the amp turn on line (both are blue and easy to mix up). Thus when your radio is on it sends a signal to the amp and the amp turns on, but when you set to CD the signal goes away and your amp shuts down. Easy fix, just re-wire the amp turn on lead and the problem will be fixed.

The remote wire from the amp is connected to a blue wire behind your head unit. This is a power antenna activation wire; it's only active when the tuner is selected. Switch the remote wire to a blue/white wire at the head unit.

My amp works on tuner but switches off when i change it to cd

The remote turn-on wire from your amplifier is connected to a blue wire behind the head unit. That's a power antenna activation wire, so the amp only turns on when the tuner is on. Switch it to a blue/white wire from the head unit instead; that should be the amp remote turn-on output.
