Thank you for the link cancerags. Should have looked at the beginning of the page on the manufacturers website. Instead only looked at the product I have. Note to self must read entire page...grins...

I installed the driver onto my computer. But it still does not work. Should I put the driver in a specific folder on my computers hard drive for it to run properly?

cancerags, I appreciate you taking the time to help, thank you.

I did that. It should work "flawlessly" but it doesn't. When I looked at the Coby MP3 Player Properties under the general tab. Device status: The drivers for this device are not installed (Code28). To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

So I un-installed the driver, restarted my computer. Then re-installed the Win98 driver, restarted my computer again. The Coby MP3 player still won't recognize the Win98 driver.

Is there anything else I can try? Am I perhaps doing something wrong?

    Hello angelicgrace,

Once you open the downloaded Win98 driver file, it will install itself by creating a new folder at c:\Program Files\USB Disk Win98 Driver. After that you MP3 should work flawlessly.
Let me know if this helps.

Hello angelicgrace and chyter as well as other users having trouble with the driver for the Coby MP-C582 MP3 player.

As an obvious remark, the win98 driver for the Coby should only be used by people running windows 98 in their computers. All others (win2000, xp and vista) have native drivers and should recognize the player without installing anything.

If you are still having trouble, try the following:
    - Make sure you are connecting the player to a USB port directly attached to your computer not through a hub.
    - Before installing the win98 driver make sure to temporarily disable any antivirus, spyware and other protection software.

Let me know how this works for you.

I plugged in my usb cable for a coby MP-C582 mp3 player

I work for Coby technical support. Our customer service phone number is 1-800-727-3592.

If you have a piece from the USB cable stuck inside your USB port, the computer needs to be serviced. Until that piece is removed you will not be able to use the port. I do not recommend trying to remove the piece youself.

If you feel this solution doesn't deserve a good rating, please let me know why so that I may better assist you. If there is anything more I can do to help, I will!

How do you charge the COBY MP C582?

Hello msvivi,

There are several reasons why this could happen. Let's start with the premise that your mp3 is operational (not defective internally in any way). Here are some reasons:

a) Your mp3 player charges while connected to the USB port, but, there is a catch. It has to be self powered; in other words, it has to be the USB port directly attached to the computer not through a hub.

b) As stated in the manual, it may take in some cases a few minutes for your computer to recognize the hardware connected through the USB port, so, plug it in and be patient.

c) If your computer runs windows 98, you need to download and install a driver that will allow your system to recognize the mp3. If that is the OS in your computer, click on this link to take you to Coby's support site and download the driver.

Hope this helps. Let me know.
