When I try to turn on camera it takes awhile then it says lens error, restart cmera

This often ends up with turning the camera in for repair, the camera (depending on model) often tries to expand the lens as a startup check and if it is unable to do so it gives an error message.
I have had the same problem with one of my digital cameras, and i got the lens changed because there was nothing to be done.
