I need to increase the ram in my toshiba sattelite 160 laptop I only have a half gig I heard that the memory is fixed on the laptop and might have to replace mother board

Your laptop comes with a memory module that is soldered onto the motherboard and is non-removeable. You have one slot where you can change out the memory module. You are capable of putting one (1) GB module in that slot. Below is the specs for that memory module.

  • Maximum Memory: 1280MB
  • Slots: 1 (1 bank of 1)
  • Standard Memory: 256, 512, or 768MB (256MB non-removable)
  • USB Support: 2.x Compliant

  • DDR PC2700

How to remove keyboard on Tosh A60?

    Hi,

Above the keyboard you should find the thin cover which you have to remove. This is called the keyboard bezel.
Get a fine flat headed screwdriver and gently lift the bezel up from the right hand side of the laptop above the keyboard. Once you have lifted one side gently pull the bezel off with your fingers.

Under this cover you will find two screws which secure the keyboard. Remove these screws and lift the keyboard up.
Please be careful. The keyboard is connected to the motherboard with the flat ribbon cable.

    Regards.

    Upgrade memory problems

are you sure you are putting the proper ram in? don't mix and match speed and size. If you can put it back the way it was and get it to start again, go to www.crucial.com and run the scanner. It will tell you exactly what you need.

    Upgrading RAM and Batteries

For batteries, my advice would be to stick with the brand of the unit (Toshiba, in this case). Toshiba lists a 12 cell battery on their website under the "laptop accessories" section of www.toshiba.com. For the A60, the part number is listed as PA3382U-1BRS and costs $152.99. You can search google for another place to buy (perhaps where you bought the laptop) but be careful that you don't get a generic in place of the original (OEM). With memory, Kingston and PNY are the aftermarket leaders and you can't go wrong with either. Kingston's website lists a whole slew of specific A60 models. Some with 256MB on board (not removable) and some with 512MB on board. So, a 512MB chip may give you 768MB or 1024MB depending on the exact model. Max memory seems to be either 1.25GB or 1.5GB depending on how much is onboard (and not removable). Installation is usually easy on any laptop and typically requires only a small screw driver to remove the memory cover on the bottom. The owners manual for the laptop likely gives the steps to add memory.
