I try to fax a document on my brother MFC 970MC fax machine but after dialing the number and press the Start key, the screen shows Receiving instead of Sending. Can you help?

  • kioa_nafital Oct 16, 2009

It actually says 'receiving' and I'm not sure why. Normally in the past it will say 'sending' once I hit the 'Start' key to fax document.

Does it say RX or TX?

These machines were made to be simple.
If you can find in the menu selection to Reset all features, you can bring the machine back to factory standard.
Beyond this, there has to be something hard wrong with the fax machine.
If anything else try calling the vendor. If the machine is old you might be out of luck. The vendor might charge for the service request on the phone.

This is not an easy task to isolate not seeing the machine physicaly to make further corrections. This would take a "Two Way Communication" from us in order to walk through this problem.

I have registered my Brother MFC 9840CDW on the brother website but it still says "not registered" when I try to email a scanned document. I registered it online. Do I have to do anything on the...

If the LCD shows Not Registered when you enter a One-Touch or a Speed-Dial number, it means that an email or number is not stored there.

If you selected E-Mail and save the E-mail address, you can only use the E-mail address when you are in Scan mode. If you selected IFAX and save the E-mail address, you can only use the E-mail address when you are in Fax mode.

Your machine has 20 One-Touch keys where you can store 40 fax or telephone numbers or E-mail addresses for automatic dialing. To access numbers 21 to 40, hold down Shift as you press the One-Touch key

You can dial in any of the following ways.

Manual dialing
Use the dial pad to enter all the digits of the telephone or fax number.

One-touch dialing

Press the One-Touch key that stores the number you want to call. (See Storing one-touch dial numbers on page 60.)

To dial One-Touch numbers 21 to 40, hold down Shift as you press the One-Touch key.

Speed-dialing

Hold down Shift as you press Search/Speed Dial, and then enter the three-digit Speed-Dial number. (See Storing speed-dial numbers on page 61.) Three-digit number

Hi there!
Mfc-970mc has a built-in message center that you can use. Once you activate this setting the person who's calling you willnot hear the fax tone again. On this setting you will receive faxes and voice calls on the same phone line/ phone number.
Please open the manual and check pages 79-95 to set up the built-in message center of this fax machine.

I am using a printer of brother mfc and i can not understand how to fax from it

The default setting on Brother MFC printer is Fax. Meaning you will usually see the Fax Button lit with a green light. (If the fax button is not lit, just press that button to get it lit.). Put the sheet of paper you want faxed with the side you want sent face down. Now press the OK button. The screen will ask you to enter the Fax number. Key in the Fax number. Press start. The printer will start scanning that page. Once the first page is scanned it will give you 2 options. You can press 1, if you have more pages to send to the same Fax number. or you can press 2. This will tell the printer(Fax) it is just a 1 page document and the machine starts dialing. Wait for the fax completed message. Please make sure that the machine is connected to a working phone line before you start.

I CAN`T SEND A FAX

Fax machines are sorta like printers, sorta like scanners, and sorta like dial up modems all wrapped into one expensive box.
1. First thing to make sure of is that you are hooked to a phone line. most fax machines have a phone handset that you can make calls from. Call someone and make sure that works. If So, you are able to connect to phone networks, and should have no trouble sending or receiving data. If you have a dead line or no sound, check the line and check the power. (its always the easy stuff that is overlooked, just check it and make sure).
2. If this fax machine has computer interface, (usb port or parallel cable port), see if you can scan with it. Drop a document into the scan area and see if the computer can scan an image from the scanner. If the scanner works, you can scan images into the fax machine to be sent to the fax number. (If your fax machine does not have a scan to computer feature, skip this.)
3. if your fax machine has a print from pc feature, try to print a document to it from your computer. If you can print, then the printer works, and you can receive faxes. (if your fax machine does not have a pc printing feature, skip this)
4. Here is how a typical fax machine works. You place the document or image into the scanner feed area. You press a big button that usually says "fax" and then, a screen pops up saying to dial the number. You dial the number and press SEND. once you press Send, the machine will scan the document, dial the number and sing a little dial up modem song awaiting a response from the receiving machine. the receiving machine acknowledges the fax, and the singing is no longer audible (but it continues because the modem song is actually data transmission/reception). after about 20-60 seconds, the fax completes and the call ends. As for the particular model you have, the functions should be about the same, though the buttons and arrangements may be different. FYI, you can send a fax straight from the PC too, if you have a dial-up fax/modem card.
