The problem is most likely that a wire broke in the insulation of the cable.

I had the same problem with my screen's vga cable that was progressively getting worse (the screens colour would keep changing until the cable was in a certain position).

The best solution is to buy a new power cable.

To prevent this , use about 10 cable ties and secure them next to each other on the start of the cable to protect it from extensive bending.
