Question about Recoton Advent Advent HT3251A TV

Advent model HT3251A

32” high definition t.v., model listed above. It was unused for at least a year, and when we energized the set, a light spark developed at the rear right corner of the set. I had opened the cabinet to see what might have happened, surmsing it may have been a fuseable link or something. It is the last component on the right rear of the circuit board assembly. I believe there are two wires going to different parts of the unit, and a line, roughly a ¼” in diameter that goes directly to the tube. There is a little tape band around this component with what looks like a metal retention band, and the sparking appears to be generating from that component. I am trying to identify the component, and see if it is in fact replaceable. Can you help me since I do not possess a schematic? Thanks.

The sparks could be generated due to a loose connection.
I would suggest to try to secure that wire(s) and see if the sparks go away, if they do; you will need to resolder that connection.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

What is the circuit designation of the part in question? It should be marked on the board as Rxxx or FBxxx. Post that here. That should allow us to identify what it is at the very least.

Curves on TV

You have a bad capacitor off the vertical output I.C..Find the pin off the I.C. that represents the out of the I.C. If you have a capacitor checker, you can check the ESR(equivalant series resistance) to see if it reads high.Look on the internet for a schematic, this will show which pin of the vertical I.C. is output, and the cap. that leads off it..

Ready for nat'l digital transition?

If it is an older model (i couldn't find anything on it either), it most likely does NOT have a QAM tuner. Be aware that only the "un-encrypted" cable channels will be free otherwise you will have to buy or rent the digital box from the company to get the rest of the regular digital channels. The un-encrypted channels are like 71.2, 83.7 so you should know if you are getting those or not.

Advent HT2751A display no good until after 1-2 hour warmup - maybe

After 3 years, I finally decided to open up the TV and do some troubleshooting. Found out the problem, It was a blown capacitor Location C554 Capacitor value is 2200uF 16V - costs about a dollar to replace yourself and the TV works brand new.

It seems it's one of those "vintage" sets. I don't imagine that the problem is very major since such (older) sets are known to develop bad joints, especially around the larger components (funny, sounds just like a problem that humans have). It might not be necessary to replace the LOPT. Just resolder as many joints as you can see. Usually the ones reponsible for arcing will leave visible signs of burn. The acrid smell you detected was probably ozone (given off when high voltage ionizes oxygen in the air). Good luck, if you haven't already solved the problem.
