Question about Janome Memory Craft 4800QD

Janome memory craft 4900 qc

My machine was fine whilst I was doing free motion quilting. When I then went back to the standard set up, it then would sew a few stiches and then grind to a halt and flash up E5 Error. When switched on and off would sew then do it again.

its the sensor on the bobinwinder who are loose. If you are handy. you can remove the top cover of the machine.
And on the left side of the bobinwinder you will find a micro switch. Probably you have to tighten the screw on it..

Hi Susan,

You're absolutely correct, you'll need to either drop the feed dogs (lever generally located near the bobbin case or on the outside base of machine) or cover the feed dogs with a plate (many machines have this included).

Then... you'll need to lower the presser foot - when you lower it, it should NOT touch the bed of the machine but sit slightly raised off the fabric surface. As you stitch the presser foot will lower onto the fabric to hold it taught as the needle penetrates.

Oddly enough it's easier to achieve smooth stitches when sewing at a faster speed, but begin by stitching fairly slowly until you get a feel for free-motion stitching. You'll be doing all the guiding and it may feel a bit strange and uncontrolled at first.

Position yourself at your machine so that when your hands on your fabric/bed of machine, your shoulders are relaxed (not all hunched up) and your elbows are slightly higher than the bed of the machine.

You'll want to stitch in a side-to-side or back and forth motion (as opposed to trying to turn the fabric.

Best of luck with this technique. Once you're comfortable with it, you're sure to enjoy the freedom of creating!

Happy sewing,
Kim & Linnette

Will a memory craft 4000 work without a foot pedal

Most machines require some sort of foot or knee pedal. There are, of course, treadle machines that you actually "pump" with your feet. There are also hand-crank machines available. Some of the newer machines that have a free motion capability can be set to stitch only when the fabric is moved under the lens, however, that is probably best only for free motion quilting and not for actually stitching seams, etc.

If your machine is lacking the foot pedal, check to see if a replacement can be found. Frequently, a sewing repair shop can either locate a generic or wire one for your machine.

Here's a manual for your machine:

I want a longer straight stitch (mine only goes up to 5) on Janome MC 4900, to mimic hand quilting look.

There are several models of machines that do a longer stitch, usually called a basting stitch. Unfortunately, your machine does not have this function. If you are looking for a machine that will give you a hand quilted look, the Baby Lock Sashiko can give you that, though it doesn't do anything else.

Check this in your manual. I think when you do free motion you have the feed dogs (toothed things the rise up and pull the fabric under the presser foot) locked down but you still have to have the presser foot lowered. When the presser foot is locked in the up position, the tension on the bobbin thread is released.
