Red light on my modem

You should see a lot more than just one red light, I'd think. Sounds like the modem took a surge. I'd look to see if there is a tiny reset hole or button somewhere. If not, leave it unplugged for 15 minutes and try again. May have failed.

If I had someone work on my computer and now the internet provider is saying I don't have a modem. Does that mean the person I had work on the computer took it or could there be another explanation? I've...

Take a look at the "back" of your desktop computer.
Look for a "square" socket, with 4 (not 8) parallel gold wires inside the socket.
You may see _two_ such sockets, side-by-side -- if you do, you certainly _do_ have a dial-up analog modem.
If the socket has 8 wires, it is your network-port (connect an Ethernet cable into that socket).

Click Start
Right-mouse-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click Hardware.
Click Device Manager.
Is there a "branch" of the hardware "tree" for 'modem' devices?
Is the modem listed in GREEN, or is it coloured YELLOW or RED,
meaning that the software for the modem is not correctly installed.

Everytime I restart my computer I have to run the connection diagnostics to get access to the internet. I am running windows xp with an AT&T gateway 2 router.

Cut power to the router.
Reconnect it, and let it start-up, for 2 minutes.

Restart your computer.
Click Start
Click Run
Type CMD and press ENTER.
Type IPCONFIG /ALL and press ENTER.
Record the information, e.g., 'IPCONFIG /ALL > temp.txt'
Better? Worse? Same?
