I have an original PS2 was playing it 2 nites ago, no problems, now I turn it on works ok, except for the only buttons on the controller that will work are Start and X. Playing FF12, and cannot change party members equip etc...
Have tried another controller but that isn't problem, it does the same thing. Have also tried another game and that doesn't change anything same buttons still don't work. Any solutions?

Re: Some buttons on controller not responding
Ask yourself a few questions: Is the PS2 overheated? Was it under any physical contact? Try plugging the PS2 in a different power outlet, then try taking out all controllers and plug one controller in the second player controller spot.

there is not a practical way to fix it like when i played ps2 and stuff like that happened i would like blow into the cord where you plug it in. and i would blow into the actual ps2... i mean there really is no way... buy a new controller they're extremely cheap now... you can get a wireless one for like $15

Originally your PS2 is preventing copied games and other formats like "PAL" (even though it is a orginal disc). There is an alternating way to play copied discs and all other. You need to get modify you PS2. contact this website www.swapmagic3.com you will find the right device.
If you bought at a reputable games retailer it should not be or if it came in the pack with the console it should not be a knock off.
Your best option would be to get in contact with SONY or take it to a games store and say you bought a short time ago and it doesn't work with some of your games and see what happens! :)
