Nikon D40X How do I get to the set-up menu?

The "Playback Menu" is highlighted and the wrench features "slide show." How do I get to the proper menu? The video is helpful but just shows the "World Time" screen but not how to get to it.

Push the 'Menu' button, with the camera turned on, then use your joystick (the largest button on the back, which has four positions: up, down, left and right) to scroll up or down until you see the wrench icon which denotes the 'Set Up' menu. Move the joystick to the right to enter the menu, then scroll up or down to select the different features.

Just to let you know, Nikon has tutorial videos available for your camera: http://www.nikondigitutor.com/eng/d40x/index.shtml

They also have the Owner's Manual available: CLICK HERE If you have your serial number available, you can download the printable version, or, if not, you can always download the non-printable version.

It is confusing, even to me and I've had mine for over a year. If Slide Show is showing, then you're at the Setup Menu. Move the joystick to the right, and Slide Show will be highlighted. To scroll through the Setup Menu's options, you use the up and down buttons on your joystick (Nikon calls it a 'multiselector'). When you have highlighted an item you want to change choosing the right arrow will alternate between checked and un-checked. When you're done with the Setup Menu, scroll up or down to highlight the selection 'Done' and then hit the OK button. Please let us know if there are features that you don't understand or simply want more clarification on, or if there's anything more you are having problems with. Hope this will FixYa.

I can't begin to tell you how many times I've downloaded PDF owner's manuals, because I have a file box that is full of manuals in print form, and finding the one I want is a lot faster just by downloading the PDF and saving it for future reference. I save them all in the same folder, with the file named by Manufacturer and then Model, because I have about seven or eight (for instance) tools that are made by the same manufacturer. Finding the manual I need (after downloading it) is easy. NikonD40X_Manual.PDF is much faster even than, "Honey!!! Where's the instruction manual filebox?"

Hello. I have the D40X myself and I have had success by going into the menu and locating the reset button. What this does is return the camera to the settings that it had the day it came out of the box. Joe

HI,I hav a Nikon D40x camera. When I use the remote control to take pivtures it only stays in that mode for about 10 seconds before ending. How can I alter this to keep it on that setting for longer?

You are being timed out as the default setting is 10 seconds.

Enter your setup menu (looks like a pencil) and scroll through to " Remote On Duration ".... now change this to 15 minutes and ok.Job done.
Remember to reset the menu once finished.

Hope this helps,if i helped you please vote.

Ml-L3 with D40x

Yes it does work, but you need to change the setting within the menu from possibly continuous shooting to remote.

And you have to point the remote at the front of the camera as this is where the sensor is.

Try turning camera on,
Then press both Green buttons for a count of 10. This should restore factory reset.

Some models also have a reset button under a connector flap, or go into your menu. Under Custom Setting Menu, choose Menu Reset.

One of these methods should work.

Nikon D40X stopped auto-focusing yesterday

I had the same problem. My issue was with all my lenses. I solved it by going to the menu and selecting the custom setting menu (pencil icon). Then from the right menu select the AE-L/AF-L and press OK. Then make sure it is set on AE/AF Lock. Presto...all my lenses worked on auto-focus.

Nikon d40x LCD screen stopped working

Have you tried the 'Menu' button? If you've turned off 'Review' in the settings menu, the screen doesn't show anything after you take a picture. If the screen doesn't come on when you push the 'Menu' button with a charged battery installed, your camera will need to be repaired.
