Question about Computers & Internet

Compaq Presario 7118US has no video

I have a Compaq Presario 7118US. All of a sudden, the computer will not boot up, or rather, we don't get a picture on the monitor. I tried a different monitor thinking it was the problem, but it did not work. It has a GE Force 2 video card in it and I thought maybe that was the problem. So I ordered another replacement card, put it in and it still does not work. Any suggestions? There was only one place to plug the card into the motherboard or I'd have tried it in another slot. As far as I can tell, the motherboard does not have a built-in video card. It has the connection for mouse, keyboard, 2 USB ports, a parallel port for printer and one other port, but is not the configuration for a monitor, it has the pins, I'm not sure what it's for.

The computer began freezing up on the internet and had to be turned off several times. Finally, the last time, it just would not come up at all. The lights are on and the computer seems to be trying to process something, but doesn't show picture. The monitor begins with the light green and then it changes to orange and stays orange.

Thanks, I'll try that when I get home today.

Hello MDavis,

This may sound like a stupid suggestion, but does the motherboard have a built-in video card? If so sometimes they override the additional one, until it is set to use the additional one.

What happened before the picture died? Was the pc turned on and then all of a sudden went black? Was it turned off and then when you tried to turn it on - it wouldn't go on?

On the monitor, what do the lights look like when you turn on the pc? Is there a green light, does it turn orange? Is it always orange?

    Hello Martha,

The orange light indicates that the computer is not sending any information for the monitor to display. This may mean that there is a problem with your operating system. It is possible it has been infected with a virus and corrupted.

What I would do, is put the cd that came with the computer or a bootup cd in the cd drive and then start the computer. Chances are high that you will see something on the screen. This will confirm that there is no problem with the monitor or video card and confirm that the operating system has a problem.

If that is correct, I would reinstall the operating system. With windows most of the time, you can install or repair the operating system without harming any of your old settings.

Also, that other port with the pins you couldn't identify is named a serial or sometimes called a COM port... back in the old days they were used for mice, but now there are used for modem and network connections to certain routers mainly.

Disconnect the drive and try to boot to the BIOS (usually with F1, F2 or Delete key). If that doesn't work, try removing all cards from the computer (except a video card if the video port is not on the motherboard). If you can boot this way, try inserting back any removed cards to see what hangs it. Do you hear any beeps when the computer is booting (beep codes)?

All the user profiles are corrupted - some installed program that should be launched during boot is incompatible with Win 7.
Since you don't know which program and the extent of the corruption all you can do is to reinstall Windows and then install all the programs back, one at a time - when the problem returns you will know that the last program is bad, get rid of it.

Power up the external monitor first and then boot up the laptop, the video info will automatically divert to the external monitor.
If you do not see a Windows image on the external monitor then it is definitely a motherboard issue, because the video card is built in on the motherboard.
The Video card uses shared RAM (part of the RAM module/s ), try re-seating the RAM modules, also test the RAM modules.
You can test the hard drive by removing the hard drive and connecting it to an USB hard drive adapter, then connect the adapter into a working computer's USB port. If the hard drive is OK, this computer will see it as an external storage device and you can open the various folders and files on the hard drive.

Yep, problem is with the video card. If it's a desktop you can pull the video card out and install reseat it back into the motherboard to see if that fixes the problem.

Let me know.

Compaq Presario V6000 Power Problem

Sounds like the power supply might have died, probably before the battery did. Once the battery had run down, the computer simply died. Easiest way to check this would be to take it to a computer shop - they shouldn't charge you very much just to check the power supply - or try to locate another supply just like it and see if the computer will boot from the new power supply.

Compaq Laptop Not booting

This is not a hard drive problem. The reason for the display of the box showing the message is that one or more of your critical system processes got stopped somehow. Your system files may have got corrupted and may be as a result of that your computer is behaving weird. I too had the same experience.
Try reinstalling the Operating System. It sure did work for me.
