Question about Pentax K100D Digital Camera

K100D flash doesn´t work

One day, while taking photos with flash, the flash stopped to charge. So I couldn´t take photos with flash any more.
I have set that don´t take the photo until the flash is charged, so the camera keeps waiting until the flash charges.
In the other modes the camera works ok, also if I disable the option to wait until the flash is charged the camera works fine.
Is there any capacitor that holds internally the energy for the flash? If so, can it be replaced easily? I have some electronic skills and want to fix the problem myself, but I am afraid of the dissassembling / assembling issue.

Hey there - I have had the same problem - but it would never charge. FOrtunately I travelled the 500Km to the store where I bought it from 364 days after I bought it and they are sending it to be fixed - sounds like a special K100D fault.

Forgot to mention that if they tell me what the fix was I will post it here.

    Good luck

Have a Pentax K100D new out of box.

    Flash doesn't work.

Have Flash Mode set @ Man. + Redeye red.

Just get "blinking" lightning bolt in veiwfinder; it never goes to "solid".

I'm a newby using this type camera; could it be something I'm doing?

Finally I had to take the camera to the service. They said that they had to change the circuit board that manages the flash. Cost: u$s 200. The camera is now working fine.

Don't use any old flash unit on the camera! You can really mess up the camera and kill it if you use an old flash unit! NOTE: Older flash units may allow high voltage to go back through the hotshoe connection, which can fry your new Digital SLR (Pentax + all others!)

Then again, I knew about this and didn't hook-up my old Vivitar flash to my new K100D & I still had problems with my 1st K100D!!!

read on . . .

Sounds like there is a lot of problems with the flash on the K100D. When I got my 1st K100D, I had it one week when the flash blew itself out. I mean, I took a picture and the thing went really, really bright and sounded like it was going to explode and I smelt something burning camera out of the camera.

It was New Years Eve and luckily a friend was there and let me use his camera, since he doesn't take that many pictures.

I took the camera back to where I bought it from and when we tried the camera and the same thing happened.

He exchanged it on the spot (because I only had it a week.)

Haven't had a problem with it since (knock on wood)!

Take care & Happing Imaging!

My camera with the dodgy flash is holidaying in Japan as they sent it to be fixed - not sure how old your camera is but I am trying to see if this is an issue that occurs with the camera model.... given that there are only two of us to date I am thinking that we may have just struck the jackpot :(

Camera only fires in flash off mode, can't take photo when flash is needed

Sorry but, most probably, you have to have your camera repaired at a shop. When you turn the flash on the camera is waiting until the flash capacitor gets charged, so that the lighting is possible. When, due to a malfunction in the flash circuit, the cap doesn't reach its full charge, the camera waits forever.

LCD screen flashing

This is a feature and not a defect of the K100D. You can turn this off by going to the menu and going into the second tab (playback menu). Once there, go to preview display, where you will have 3 options - off, histogram and brighten areas. Set this to off (your camera is set to brighten areas, that is why the white parts of your photos appear to be blinking).
Hope this helps!

Bad USB conection?

I assume that you are using Win.XP,
- did you check; System Properties>Hardware>Device Manager
Is there anything like yellow exclamation etc, especially on the USB section?
- Is it BIOS USB function enabled? Maybe disabled by accidentally.
- You said nothing working through USB, all ports are same?
If this ocurred all of a sudden, than I think you have a software problem.
I have a K100d, its been seven months now and ~6500 photo. My USB cables&fittings are fine, I always using USB port to transfer photos, no problem at all.
I hope your problem will be solved in a short time.

Maybe you can try sensor cleaning mode;
Go to Menu>Set-up>Sensor cleaning, press right than choose "Mirror Up", wait a moment than power off the camera. Maybe this can help.
