Re: convergance problem

Vin, board replacement is BIG bucks, IF it`s available, convergence IC`s are located on a large silver colored aluminum heat-sink, on the board they will be marked IK04 & IK05, they are probably STK 392-110`s or STK 392-150`s, those 2 will have to be replaced, check all of the low Ohm resistors lined up in front of the IC`s for dis-coloration, replace any that look slightly burnt with the EXACT rating or the new IC`s will fry, if you have questions e-mail me back, If you are not proficient at soldering & un-soldering and if you don`t have a good voltmeter, don`t attempt this repair yourself, BMW Rider

Ur tv have a convergence problems,it dead. The convergence board the 2 STK convergence ICS and some or all it resistors are dead.To fixes convergence problems. The convergence board all these parts must be changed to get the onvergence in sink again to get the colors and picture to normal. The tv shop will cost u $300-350 for parts and labors.

How do I fix a converence problem?

First try using Autofocus. If there is a convergence problem this won't fix the problem.

Try using the convergence alignment procedure from service manual.

Here the procedure that works on most Hitachi rear projection.

Here the grid with convergence problem

If the procedure does not work, then the two STK392-110 on convergence board must be replaced.

Before replacing the ICs you can test the pico fuses located on convergence boards. Simply read ohms to test if they have continuity.

Better also testing components on convergence board like resistors located at the base of STKs.

After removing the old STK, the new ones must be re-soldered using cooling paste.

Price for single IC can is about $8/$20. I think
STK392-110 on this model can be better replaced with STK392-150. I suggest contacting the seller on this.

The service manual is available here.

Hitachi 61UWX10BA RPTV Convergence Repair

All of the resistors that fail are very low reading ones---like RK54(1.5 OHM-1 WATT) RK50(2.2 OHM 1 WATT) AND RK58(2.7 OHM 1 WATT)

These are not large resistors--all have location numbers on top of the board under them---most of the protection ones will begin with RK----check them like a fuse--they rarely go off value and if no reading across them they are bad---

There will be some higher value resistors like 150 or 220 ohm----never seen one of those bad.

Sometimes you just have to check them all and if they are good replace the chips and see what you have.

Do not forget to apply heat sink compound to the new chips before you install them(remove any old grease first from the heat sink.)

Good soldering is important here.

I'm assume you are referring to a non adjustable convergence option. this will occur when you have a damaged convergence chip set that is located on either the PC board or the convergence board. The location of the affected chip will vary from model to model but, in most units, this can be fixed by replacing the convergence board or chip.

Your TV most likely has a convergence failure. ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses. Its a fairly easy DIY job or you can call in a pro. If you want to do the repair yourself check the site Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, thermal paste, email/phone support, etc.

HI, normally when this occurs, this will signal a malfunctioning convergence chip that is located o the convergence board. this convergence board controls the calibration attempts when syncing the RGB streams.

Simply replacing the convergence board or chip will fix this issue.

Stk394-160 Convergence IC, number on top right of chip

I have read both of the above posts.
On the first post, the 'codes' are the date codes. Both parts were manufactured in 2007, and will have no bearing on performance, should both lots not be the same as they were manufactured on different weeks.

On the second post:
There is allot of misinformation on the web pertaining to the applications of STK394-160(E)'s.
This special device was manufactured by Sanyo exclusively for Hitachi PTV's. They will not work in any other projection TV's except for Hitachi. Let me say this again, "They will not work in any other projection TV's except for Hitachi." The 'E' suffix is the nomenclature for PB Free or lead free. All STK394-160's were manufactured as 'lead free'. The 'E' will not appear on the part. Here's more information:

For Hitachi PTV's ( Projection TV's ), STK392-150 replaces STK392-110. STK392-120 should be replaced with STK392-120 or STK394-160's in matched pairs. The -120's are 4 amp devices while both the -110's and -150's are 3 amp. We market replacement kits for -110's that contain two original Sanyo STK392-150's and the associated resistors along with solder and resistor designations for all models. We also have an STK394-160 Kit, along with solder and resistor designations for all models.

Prelco electronics is a direct purchaser of STK's IC's directly from Sanyo Semiconductor Distribution. If you would like the real parts, your search has ended. Parts can be ordered on line, or toll free: 888-773-5268, ( 908-429-9999 local ) Sales X 2,

Convergence chips

The convergence IC or in a sense ,amplifiers and the resistor are output resistors... if they are burning up the current going through them is spiking too high... TO me this is an indication that the "convegence yokes" are shorted. These are coils around the tubes that control convergence. I would suspect maybe that these are shorted to ground somehow. This is my first guess for this problem
