A good place to start is by downloading THIS from Crucial it will ID your motherboard and tell you the maximum memory and the type of chip to buy then all you have to do is turn off your PC take out the old chips and install the new ones.
They are key located o you can't get it in the work wrong way round and all you need to do is release the plastic retaining clips at either end, to put the new ones in make sure both ends are at the open down position and put slight pressure at both ends until it clicks into place.
Please rate if this helps.
Desktops have 2 to 4 memory slots. If you have spares, you can do one of 2 things, remove a memory card and take it in for a match (2 more 1 gig chips is killer). If you only have 2 slots, take a chip in and ask for 2 more chips - that total the increased size that you desire.
Thanks to Microsoft's fat windows design, you will need a minimum of 2 gig to run vista and 1 gig to run XT. BTW, the term "fat" was not intended to be a compliment.
Once the new chips are installed, just turn the machine on and it will recognize the new memory and adjust accordingly.

What type of computer is this? Mac, PC? Laptop, Desktop? Most likely you will need to purchase a DDR DIMM or DDR SODIMM.
