Recently I used a Sony ECM 77 microphone hardwired to a Shure FP33
mixer. I could never get a reading above -10db on the VU meters. I
replaced the battery to the microphone -no improvement, I then used
the FP33s' phantom power to power the mic, (after taking out the
battery in the mic) I still had unacceptable meter readings. Sound
was clean, but levels low.
I replaced the ECM 77 with a Lectrosonics 195UCM series mic, using the
same input, no problems.
What am I doing wrong?

Sometimes the top element of the ECM-77 capsule makes bad contact with the
bottom part of the capsule. The top half is screwed onto the bottom half.
Try loosening the the top half ("lefty loosey") then re-seating it and see
if there is a difference.
