40wh08b convergence problem

Hi experts,
had tv since oct 2000 ......couple of months ago on switch on had the odd grouping of what appeared to be flyback lines but only in small area of screen [not all the way accross].....this problem did not show all the time.intermitant.....ABOUT 4 days ago this problem disappeared and now the tv has a bent picture DOWN at bottom left...bent UP at top right of picture........this means that the RED and BLUE are out of syncronisation by as much as 1.5 inches ie showing a blue and red picture outline......the centre of pic and top left and bottom right still appear okay.....normal convergence adjustment will not sort this........shame to get rid of...tubes /guns still good and strong.......pic still very good ...........HELPPPPPPPPPP

    and your part stk394-160e
    or hitachi pt cz 01341

silly question are they all correct
is stk394 correct or should it be stk392

i can solder.....but havent taken on this task before ....any more advice/tips to ensure smooth there any special setups to do after installation which would require advanced menu access...finally TV SAFETY --only thing i understand is earth myself and apply limited heat to ic.....any further tips..
    thanks bernard

  • bbd750 Dec 28, 2007

took back off tv ......had very close look at ic's.....soldering looks superb.....18 solder points per ic.......GULP
    number is STK392-110 on both
tv model is for european market 40wh08b this is the 100 htz model with built in 5.1 dolby digital system ....thanks for your patience...couldn't access site earlier ,just kept taking me to a main page on how to become an expert and earn money!!!!
looking forward to your reply .

  • bbd750 Dec 28, 2007

looks like you recommend ic's 160e...but if i have trouble obtaining these could i use 110/110t or even 150 as long as good make..original 110's have been in for 7 yrs

okay i found ic,s but possibly not that good to identify what you say is B+ feed resistors .....any help identifing them ie size shape etc and how many am i looking for
had good look at all components both sides of ic's nothing looks burnt or discoloured......but still don't know if i was looking at B+feed resistors...are they on ic side or heat sink side....2 x sets of 6 green components behind heat sink 3 x small 3 x large [2 sets] and 2 x black cylinder components [total 4]either side of ic/heat sink..........starting to show my ignorance now......HELP
ps its 3.28 in the afternoon here do you go to sleep!!!!!!bernard

  • bbd750 Dec 28, 2007

me again.....your last comemt 10 am friday implies i have been looking at resistors.......ive had a test run and had full panel out of set after removing all wire connectors and re installed unit to check still works [albeit with convergence fault]
finally any more tips see my 1st reply /coment i have to use any special/advanced menues to set up after installation of ic's or just normal convergence menu....ALSO is there a stk392-110E available as an alternative to the 110T
    thanks for your help
signing off as its nearly 12 at night here
ps petrol is equivalent to $9.40 a gallon here ---any suggestions on FIXING THIS !!!!!

  • bbd750 Dec 29, 2007

hi,appreciate all your query...looks like i've seen pictures of a bonding paste between ic's and heatsink to transfer the you use this..what is it ...what is product called..and would it be something to obtain via my ic supplier......
ps was i looking at the resistors!!!!!!!!!!!

  • bbd750 Dec 29, 2007

    final final query
i noticed other sites state stk394-250 is the direct replacement for the stk392-110
    do you have any thoughts/comments
also just to reiterate and go back to first posting
this tv is and will converge on most areas of the screen
it is only the top right quarter and bottom left quarter that shows this those two areas on convergence menu [which puts 9 numbered markers and a large cross in centre of screen to assist manual alignment] i can adjust blue and red left and right but not up and down.........can i take it that this is in line with ic failure and that only random areas of screen can/will be affected by this ic failure.....
any more info on the resistor numbers and ohms of each resistor as i may choose to replace at time of ic installation...
i appreciate your patience in answering all these on going reply/comments.....not all us limeys are the same

  • bbd750 Dec 29, 2007

thanks for the reply...but could you possibly look at the rest of my last posting
ie about resistors and convergence as you seemed to focus onto only first third of this comment/reply.......
sorry to pester you again but if you are unable or can't answer these points then just say .

thanking you in advance and asking you to remember that your the expert and what might seem simple to you may need a little more info /help with as we say [putting the meat on the bones] for us thickies

Hitachi part # CZ cheap generics..they won't hold up..

Thank you for your ? 's and comments...all info is helpful.....

    1) Remove back of set and look at large heatsinks with IC's

on them.....what is the number on the originals ?

    2) Verify model # off back of your tele......

Caution: Before ordering parts,we can discuss which IC's are

"best" and what will waste your time and labor........T.

  • Vista Electronics Dec 28, 2007

Thank you for your reply !

    1) Toshiba STK392-110 subs to STK392-110T ( ok to use )

2)Hitachi brand has an upgrade ...over the last couple of years ..

    STK392-110 sub STK392-150 sub STK394-160E ( upgrade )

Therefore, the best, but not cheapest is....

    STK392-110 original sub to STK-394-160E = Hitachi part #

CZ 01341....I use several pairs of these per week.......

3)Next,you should examine carefully the B+ feed resistors next

to the IC's for burn or over-heating....usually visible....T.

No rest for the weary !

Sounds like resistors are ok.........use quality IC's of your choice

and go to work !...............................T. I0:00 AM Friday

  • Vista Electronics Dec 29, 2007

No special prep.......STK392-110 is generic description = each

MFR has their own Part #....Toshiba,Philips,Hitachi.....I only

recommend Original Equipment Manufacturer ( OEM ) parts..

anything else are on your own...

PS. 100 pounds or 100 dollars....which one has more value ?

    Your choice is...........??............T.

  • Vista Electronics Dec 29, 2007

I use heatsink compound on each of the STK's I replace..T.

  • Vista Electronics Dec 29, 2007

    Final,final,final comment !!!

Remember : STK392-110 is the common description of the

most common convergence IC used in most such repairs today.

Best replacement is HITACHI PART # CZ 01341.......

STK392-250 is a common IC.....If you use it as a sub for -110,

Who says it is a quality sub ? What Manufacturer ? What is their PART # ?? One more example = TOSHIBA STK392-110 subs to STK392-110T = TOSHIBA PART # 23135090

  • Vista Electronics Dec 30, 2007

Replace the IC's and your convergence problems should be

solved................I don't usually change any resistors unless

they are visibly damaged.....If I need to know the value I look

with a magnifier at the resistor, as my eyes aren't what they used to be...or

I look in the service literature if I have it....or I call the parts

supply armed with the board location and they assist me...or

    I research on the internet............................................but,

many times, there is no resistor damage...........................T.

If you don't feel qualified to DIY ( do-it-yourself), you might

want to hire a least you have the info to ask the

    proper questions ......Terry.

Replacing the Convergence IC's should do the trick. But it is not a easy repair do to the disassembly requierments. I would recommend calling Mitsubishi at 18003322119 to get a local service facility to come out and give you a estimate to repair.

Toshiba 43HX70 convergence problem

One or both of the STK convergence chips have probably failed.

I can give you guidance on this if you are confident to do the repair. I had the same problem with my Tosh 40WH08B and after replacing these chips it works like new.

If the convergence on one or more color does not align using the convergence setup procedure, that means that one or more convergence ICs must be replaced, that is the reason why you get bad picture.

That means that the convergence ICs are bad and must be replaced, the job is about $200/$300.

The problem is probably that one or both of the STK convergence chips have failed. These control the convergence coils around the red blue and green guns and are the most common cause of sudden convergence problems and the protection circuit shutting the TV down when turned on.

I can post details of how I replaced these on my Toshiba 40WH08B. Yours should be similar.

Color appears to change every 10-20 seconds

This is either a problem in the convergence regulator circuit or the convergence module

Scrolling lines

Try using a DVD though the component input (need a 480P out ). If the pix si ok I wouldsuspect the cable box. If the problem is still there I would suspect a video switching IC or a Leaky regulator.
