How to move adaptec SATA 1420SA card from one PC to another

My motherboard died.
I have another PC ready.
How do I lift the card (with the 4 HDDs in RAID) from my old PC - to my new PC?
What is the correct procedure - so that i don't lose any data? . . . as this is the only copy of this data - there is no other backup.

Thanx
Arthur

Man_K, Switching the raid card assemnly shouldnt make you lose any data on the drives.
After you install the setup on your motherboard. Windows should start and attempt to install the motherboard drivers. Before windows starts got to the BIOS and set it to defaults.

As long as you have a SATA capable motherboard, you can get whatever sata standard you can find at the best price. If you fit SATA 1 drives to a SATA3 board, they will still run, The reverse is the same. You can only transfer data at the speed of the slowest component.

Intel DG31PR, How many HHDs can i add?

The board has 4 SATA ports and one IDE port. Therefore, assuming that you also want to connect a CD/DVD drive, you should be able to add another two SATA HDDs. You may need to get a SATA power adapter (splitter) cable, if no no more unused SATA power cables are available.
Also make sure that your power supply is not already "at the limit"...

Hi, the motherboard is unable the find sata hdds, there is no such option in the bios, neither xp and 7 is unable to locate the hdd

Boot up into your Bios and make sure your SATA is enabled and set, then save. Make sure your primary drive is on SATA 0 and your second is SATA 1, I tend to start my optical drives at SATA 5 and work my way down to avoid changing ports on an upgrade. Also make sure your using \hard disks complient with your SATA controlers version.

Hello,

you might consider yourself buying a SATA card to support your 16mb cache SATA HDD.

Your motherboard's chipset cannot handle these new versions of SATA HDDs.

Hope this helps.

How much total Hard Disk capasity supported by my motherboard

Since it supports 120GB, it will support any "large" SATA drive, such as 500GB or twice or three times that size.

Hdd installation

The capacity that a motherboard can support is designated by the BIOS.... a few years ago when HDDs started to get big, there was an issue in supporting disks above 137GB as this exhausted the old HDD addressing system..(BIOS), to rectify this the BIOS code was re-written to support 48bit LBA (Logical block addresses) so as long as you have up to date BIOS for this motherboard, it should be alright.

you should be able to install any capacity available on IDE as long as you have updated the BIOS to the latest version (check the Giga byte website to download this)

If you wish to upgrade your PC further you can get a SATA/PATA adapter, or you can get a PCI SATA, IDE or SCSI controller card. Effectively there are very few limitations to the number of disks nowadays.
