Microphone is not working windows vista

My Vista microphone suddenly stopped working...Go to Device Manager, right click on SigmaTel and click Disable, close Device Manager. Open Device Manager again and again right click and choose Enable. This worked for me!

I had that problem and I think I can help.
-Type in Sound in the vista search or do the control panel Hardware and Sound thing to get to the sound stuff. Hit the Recording tab. If you have the same problem as I had, you will see Stereo Mix and Microphone there, but Stereo Mix is the default and Microphone says "Not working." What you need to do is click on microphone to select it, and go to the bottom of that same tab and hit set default. Sorry I'm not too technical, but for me this solved the problem.

i rolled back my sound driver, after that it worked perfect.

My microphone has always worked on vista for, I use it everyday on skype, but today it will not work, I can hear the caller but they cannot hear me. I thought my headset was broken and i bought a new one. but its still doing the same thing with the new headset. It says the microphone settings are enabled and working, but when i do the mic test, it says that it cannot hear me.
what can i do?? help!

What kind of microphone are you using. If you're using a Carbon Mike (that's like the kind included in a lot of Software Packages), they're already high gain (some case too high). Look a the setting for microphone, you can increase gain by 10db, that will get you there with one (over gain).

If it's not a Carbon Mike, that's so common, you required a pre-amp for the microphone, I'm using a Equalizer that has a gain of up to 12db, and it work fine. It's FET, so it also isolates, so I'm using another on for Line Out. Work's great, and I can balance it.

Microsoft Vista SP2 could be the problem - Soundmax driver no longer working for the mic. Windows update installed High Definition Audio Device for a driver - mic still not working. My dual boot (Vista, XP pro) to XP still works fine. Driver problem with Soundmax and Microsoft.

I am using Windows Vista Laptop & I have got accidentally removed the Realtak Audio Input recording device (i.e.-MIC),hence I am not able make a voice calls on internet like skype ,googletalk etc.
Can anybody tell me how to get Installed my MIC(recoeding device) back to the PC.
In Control Panel->Sounds & Devices->Audio->
Sound Recording Default Device ( Audio Input Device)is showing empty.
I want To know What should I do to get back my Audio Input Device so that I can use my MIC of HEadset to used for talking on Internet.

Just got off with Dell support. Make sure both headset plugs (microphone & headset icons) are plugged into the 2 headset jacks. Do not plug the microphone plug into the microphone port when using a headset. Use both headset ports. This was the problem for me.

I just reinstalled windows vista due to a bug.. now I cant talk to my friends with my microphone or use my head phones to listen. I can hear everyone talking to me thru speakers but not headphones. HELP!

I have in built microphone on camera in USB port & it cannot hear me. GDMALL 1370, video working fine on Vista, looked at Device Manager, Sound & chosen mic says it's working & set as default but still not picking up my voice. Nothing is muted & no on & off switch on set. it is plug in USB & should work but doesn't....any ideas anyone???

I have tried all of the solutions above-
* Reinstalled Vista
* Checked jacks are properly connected
* I do not have ANY other software installed on Vista
* Disabled and enabled Sigmatel
* Checked other versions of mics
* Checked sound settings in control panel
YET my mic is not working. The speakers and headphones are working fine.

I am using Dell Inspiron 6400. The mic is external with a headset.

HELP!!!
