Did you install the right audio driver for it? You can download it from the Dell support site, or use a driver update program:

My Dell Inspiron 6000 stopped playing sound. I uninstalled and reinstalled SigmaTel driver. This did not work.

Does it show that the device is working properly in the device manager? You could try and use system restore to roll back windows to a time when the sound was working. Windows may have updated software and caused problem with audio. If you roll back the system to a time when you know the sound was working then the on board audio may be defective. Have you tried plugging in headphones in the headphone jack and check if there is sound? Are the sound properties muted? The laptop speakers or internal amp may have stopped working also.

My speakers on my Dell Dimension do not work

Check to see if you have a sound card in a pci slot or if the sound is intergrated into the motherboard. If its in the board you can get the driver from the computer or motherboard manufacturer. If its a pci card get the driver from the card manufactures website

About 3 months ago we lost total sound to our Dell Inspiron E1705. I bought 3 laptops at the same time and 2 of them have lost sound. I've re-installed the SigmaTel sound drive to no avail. Any help...

If you can't find a secondary model number on your system that is a bit different than E1705. You may simply try the windows update site and choose custom, select hardware and see if they recognize and updated driver for your system. When having trouble finding on board Ethernet or sound this has worked for us a couple of times.

Sound driver

Sorry pal. Machine is a DELL Inspiron 1721. No cable neither loudspeakers. I have no motherboard CD shipped with laptop. I already tried to install audio drivers from DELL Utilities & Drivers CD, but OS refuses to recognize that a soundcard is present.

Thanks anyway. It has to be solved by someone who's had the same problem and managed to work around it.

Sound card

Your laptop should have a sound card built into the board. To make sure, check for three round color coded holes anywhere along the edge of your laptop frame and ports. The Sound output is usually green. The sound in is blue and the mic in is red. If you plug in speakers n the green and don't here music, then check to see your SOUND DRIVERS are installed. If they are not no sound will play. The check for Sound drivers, right-click My Computer, then chose HARDWARE and let it list the components. Any one with a yellow mark needs drivers.
