Loud Freezer Motor noise

Lately, a new fan noise or motor noise from the freezer section started. It stops when I open the refrigerator door, but continues when I pull open the freezer. I also have a lot of frost that developed in the freezer section. The unit is only 1-1/2 years old, as has run well up until now. The doors seem to seal well when closed, and it sits level on the floor. Thanks in advance for any help with this problem!

I've been having the exact same problem for several weeks.  At one point, I turned off the ice maker and the noise stopped.  That only lasted for a few days.

I could have written that comment - my fridge has exactly the same problem! About 5 weeks ago we had very humid weather, that's when the problem first occurred. The noise was moderate for a few days then became increasingly loud - I could easily hear it from 40 feet away - and I'm hard of hearing. Discussions with LG proved disappointing relative to a long-term fix. I was told that the noise most likely was caused by an ice buildup and that I should disconnect the machine overnight. I did that and the next morning found a large puddle on the floor and when I plugged the machine back in it ran quietly. The moderate noise has been back for two days now and unplugging the machine overnight has not solved the problem nor has it produced a puddle. Oddly, sometimes the machine is quite noisy. then the noise suddenly stops and the machine runs quietly for a while before again becoming noisy. This is driving us batty - it's our LAST LG!!

We are experiencing the same exact problem and our LG LFX25960 turned 2 years old last week. In the 1st 6 months we had the ice machine and main circuit board replaced under warranty.

Is there a way to defrost this particular unit?

I have the exact same problem with my refrigerator and I also called to get some information on how to handle this problem. I was told the exact same thing deforst the freezer fan. I did and the noise went away.

But as everyone else has described a couple weeks later the exact same thing. We have even tried turning the freezer temperature up some hoping that this would help the issue, guess what it didn't..

I have the same problem with the LG Model LFX25960ST. Per LG's direction, I unplug it overnight and it seems to work ok for a short while then the noise comes back. This unit is less than two years old and I paid $2500 for it. One would expect better. This is the lasl LG product we'll have in our home-and I intend to pass the word on to friends and relatives.

I don't usually buy the service plan but I did for this unit (hey it's gen 1). The service guy said he has seen this problem quite a bit and that LG created a new RCM board to fix it (part# BBR34917104). Apparently the OEM board didn't detect the ice build up on the fan motor very well. I had the new board installed two days ago and defrosted the freezer. So far so good, I'll post again if I have any further issues.

For everybody with the noise problem. The solution is to replace both fan motors along with all sleeves and noise damper parts. I have taken out both of the fans and have found that being a DC motor the wheel degrades over a period of time. This makes the shaft wobble, making the noise that everybody is refering to. The degrading of the wheel also effects the speed of the fans. Slowing them down to a point that eventually the refrigerator is effected.

I've had this problem a couple of times.... Usually the fan starts to collect ice.... The only way I know to fix it, is to take the fan out and melt the ice...How to keep it from happening again is still a mystery

GE Side by Side Refrig - loud noise behind the ice maker section Model PSS25SGMB BS

it sounds like the evaporator fan blade is hitting some ice that has built up around the blades i have seen this happen a lot on g.e. SxS lately,if you can remove the ice maker and dispenser you can see the fan blade,if you dont want to do this then shut down the refrigerator and leave freezer door open and heat it carefully with a hairdrier to speed the process up to melt this ice then restart it and the noise should be gone

My LG ice maker fan is making a really loud noise right after the water stops going in

Hello, Self-defrosting refrigerators use a circulating fan to move air through the freezer and refrigerator compartment. This fan runs when ever the unit is cooling. The fan is located in the freezer, as follows:
  • If the freezer is on top, the fan is on the back wall, near the top or bottom, in the center of the freezer.
  • If the freezer is on the bottom, the fan is on the back wall, near the top of the freezer.
  • If the freezer is on the left, the fan is on the back wall, half way up or near the top.
Overtime the fan may become noisy, usually making a chirping or squealing sound, though it may make a loud groaning noise instead.
To find out if the fan is causing the noise, just open the freezer door and push in any fan/light switches, if the noise is louder when the door is open, the evaporator fan motor is the cause. You can lubricate or repair this motor. You must replace it.
There are three components on the outside back of the refrigerator that may become noisy: the compressor, the condenser fan motor(if self-defrosting), or the defrost timer (if self-defrosting).
Thanks

Loud noise from freezer

Hi, The noise you are hearing is the evaporator fan motor.
Remove the rear panel in the freezer section and see if ice or frost is building up and hitting the fan blade.
If there is frost, you have a defrost problem that can be tested while you have the panel off.
Please let me know if I can assist you further on this issue.
Thanks
Vic

the fan goes off when door opened and when closes it will turn back on is normal operation of fan and door control --as to noise --fan may be failing ---iced over ----if seal failing will cause unit to run more and allows more moisture into evap which can cause more ice over

Loud Noise when freezer door is closed (as if fan is not working)

it is the fan or the blade hitting something when you open the door it shuts the fan off and on when closed you need to gain access to the fan and see if it is the motor of the blade before you lose any food

Freezer section evaporator fan motor bearing are going out. This would be indicted by a high pitched squealing noise. Have the fan motor replaced and it should solve your problem.

I own an LG up right refrigerator with the freezer on the bottom. The unit is about three years old and we have been very happy with the frig. Lately the unit has been making a loud fan winding noise....

  • i would just replace the fan motor $40
  • they have bushings in them that sometimes make noise when the motor shaft moves to a certain position. when you open the door it disrupts the airflow of the refrigerator and the motor shaft will go to a different position causing the noise to stop.
