Hi there I have just bought a copy of DK world explorer but get a message re: the sound installation and then the programm closes doen - is this becasue we are on windows xp?

The Software is not installed completely, so kindly uninstall the application by navigating from control panel-> Add or remove programs and reboot the machine.
once the machine turn up, then install the application as fresh copy. it should fix the issue.
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Services.
Double-click the service that did not start.
Click the Log On tab.
Verify that the service has not been disabled for the hardware profile that you are using. If it has, click Enable.
Click the General tab. Verify that the service has not been disabled in the Startup Type box. If it has, click Automatic to have it start when you start the computer.
try this, Run as Administrator and set the program EXE to Compatability Mode for XP SP2, and also, run as Administrator, do this for everything, patches included.
All you have to do is carry it to your dealer and have them install there IDS scan tool and access programmable parameters in the smart junction box and turn on the feature.
