My computer has always had window vista. I just restarted it and now it does not recongize vista and saying that I need a product key. The thing is that it came with vista so I wouldn't have that information. What can I do?
If it came preloaded with Vista, whoever sold it to you SHOULD have provided you with the COA (Certificate of Authenticity) and the original CD/DVD. Look for a Microsoft sticker on your machines' case, it'll have a 25 character alphabetic/numeric string on it, which is your product key. If you can't find the sticker, get on to whoever sold you the machine.
Chances are, if it was a private sale, the seller simply installed the software but didn't activate it, thereby making you think you had legal software when in fact you don't.
Take a look at this thread: http://www.pcworld.com/article/129890/run_vista_legally_without_activation_for_a_year.html
Hopefully it's not a case of you being misled, but...
