I have a Canon PC

I have a Canon PC 850 copier. It is not throwing any codes and searches on the internet do not seem to be helpful to see how to put it in service mode or get it to throw codes. Their descriptions on how to get it done seems like a different copier altogether. Of course I have it half apart right now. The first copy is fine. The second seems to jam at the green knob just under the cartridge every single time. The cartridge gears seem to move difficultly. Based on the value of the machine and the cost for a new cartridge I am looking for a code or more information to see if a motor is bad before I try a new cartridge. Any help? I can trouble shoot with a meter with help. Any help thanks!! I need help ASAP. Also, I do not have a service manual, that may help. Lots of experience working on things, but no experience working on a copier.

- The information provided to me did not help as I do not have any error codes and can not get my machine to throw error codes. The original message is as follows:

- The most recent e-mail didn't help either. However, it was a little more help. In any case, I confirmed the cartridge is moving fine. I tried the reset trick, it is now jamming on the second copy every time just like before, but it is now showing error code E 007. Does this help anyone to provide me with some insight to the problem?

Oct 25, 2009

- Now that it is flashing the E 007 ADJ error codes it will not do anything. I pulled the cartidge, nothing happened. I tried the bypass, nothing. I tried to push the pin in the hole behind the front cover also combined with the on button, it will not power up with the door open. I saw the second link in your e-mail. It looked like it would help, but I have no idea what they are talking about. Are they connecting some kind of scan tool? I am getting frustrated and thinking about dumping the machine and discontinuing my membership. None of the help seems to give me a clue as to how to fix the machine. Also, if I go this route, how do I cancel?

Oct 30, 2009

- I've tried everything and wish to cancel my subscription. Nothing helps this sorry old copier. Please let me know how to cancel.

Have you tried making copies with out the cartridge installed? It should jam due to paper not following proper path (will most likely ride high and not guide into fuser rollers) but, does it sound different? Does it also jam in the same fashion if feeding through the manual bypass? How many copies are on this cartridge? Please let me know progress...Tim

- Service Mode:
- Remove control panel (2 screws) but keep the ribbon connector connected
- Close the clamshell
- Short JP103 & JP104 with a flat-head screwdriver and power on until the display reads "F"

Oct 25, 2009

- So, back to the last entry.....use a phillips screw driver to remove 2 screws ( 1 from each side of the control panel.)....one on the left side of machine near the top....and one on the right side of machine near the top. Now, open the machine like you were going to replace the cartridge. The control panel should be able to be pulled from the machine...but, make sure not to pull too far (so that the ribbon cable remains connected ) Now close the top ( latch the top down ) Look on the exposed side of control panel PWB (vertical one, not horizontal one) This is DC Controller (logic board) On this logic board, locate 2 metal jumper wires labeled JP103 and JP104. With copier off, short these 2 jumpers together while turning power back ON. Continue shorting jumpers together until 'F' appears in the copy quantity window. Then follow the 3 steps to set / adjust for fixing belt temp and tracking. Tim

My research for your model has suggested that the service mode for the Canon PC 850 is used to reset error codes that prevent the machine from continuing. I have seen many instances of these instructions, do these appear to match the machine you are working with? "I entered service mode and it fixed itself. With the front panel open and the copier lid/carriage lifted up, I used a paperclip and stuck it in the small hole on the front grey panel (DC controller) and simultaneously used a pen to hold down the tab in the slot on the lower left edge that makes the copier think the lid is down. It reset the error code and all is OK now." But this is not what you want. I believe you want a diagnostic mode to give you an error code relating to a motor, not a reset to clear an error. I cannot give you this code, but I would suggest that if a motor were bad, your problem would be more consistent, and the first copy would not be fine. The fact that the cartridge gears move with difficulty is troubling. Here are some cartridge troubleshooting tips: Checking the toner cartridge Ensure the toner cartridge is correctly installed and rotated into its opened position. Remove the toner cartridge in question. Inspect the cartridge?s cap to ensure it is securely taped in place. Tilt the cartridge back and forth to ensure it contains toner. Rotate the gear at the rear of the cartridge. You should hear the auger coil move inside the toner cartridge. If the auger coil and gear rotate correctly, the cartridge is good. It seems to me that your auger coil and gear are not rotating correctly, therefore your cartridge is not good. I understand that you don't want to buy a new cartridge if that is not the solution, however I suggest that if it doesn't fix your problem the money is not wasted because eventually you will use the new cartridge once the machine is fixed. Buying a cartridge may prevent you from hiring a Canon service tech, but hiring a service tech will not prevent you from eventually buying another cartridge. Hope that helps.
