first thing you need to know is the default ip/password is 192.168.1.1 with the password being "admin" that will get you into the router im assuming your going wired to the desktop and wireless for the laptop, so first you'll need to hook the router up to the desktop using a cat5 wire from your network card to one of the numbered ports on the back of the router, ok now that you have a connection to the router open up a web browser and in the address bar type in 192.168.1.1, no user name and a password = admin, once your in there click under the wireless settings and enable the wireless network, change the ssid to something you like and can remember, then under the wireless security tab enable the wpa2 security encryption personal works fine then enter a nice password that you can remeber but isnt too easy to guesse, once you have that set up use the laptop to see if you can now see your new network and once you can try and connect to it using the password you just made up, now then if your going wireless all the way your still going to have to wire your desktop to the router for these initial steps once the changes are made then if you have a wireless card for your desktop then you can disconnect the wire and use your wireless card to find the new network and connect to it :) hope this is helpfull
