Throw windows in the trash bin and get Linux !!!

goto Maxtor website and download one of their drive install/diagnose/format programs (such as MaxBlast 5). Run it making sure to select appropriate options for XP.

WHAT CAN USE TO REPLACE A MAXTOR 7Y250MO HARD DRIVE? IT IS IN A 6 1/2 YEAR OLD DELL DEMENSION XPS GEN 2 TOWER RUNNING WIN XP. THE OS CAN NO LONGER FIND THE DRIVE AND WILL NOT BOOT UP. I WOULD LIKE TO...

Hi,
The Dell Dimension XPS GEN2 has support for both, IDE and SATA standards. Your Maxtor is SATA drive, you can use any SATA drive as replacement. You mentioned that the OS no longer find the drive, make sure that you load SATA drivers at your Windows XP reinstallation, maybe your old drive is not defective only not recognized in the installation process. You can download the floppy image with required drivers here, see SATA drivers section. When you start Windows installation, at the Windows Setup Screen you should see, at the bottom of the screen, a message saying "Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver." At that point press the F6 button and when the next screen appears press S key to specify an additional device. Select the drivers from the provided list(to load all drivers from the disk, beacuse I don't know which is yours as I don't know the content of the disk, repeat steps to specify additional device), after drivers load your hard drive should be recognized and you can continue installing the Windows XP operating system. Ignore these steps if your hard was already tested and confirmed that is defective. Good luck!
If this is the solution for your problem, please rate my post, otherwise give us more details.

Regards,
Andras

Maxtor One Touch II - installation Software

I have a disk that worked for me and I am running windows xp. I also have the website address that is supposed to have the 98 drivers which could work perhaps. http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=Maxtor_OneTouch_Drive_USB/Win98SE_Driver&vgnextoid=b07d8b9c4a8ff010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

Guess you could try them first and if that doesnt work I could perhaps make a backup of the disk/package/mail/ worth anything?

Hanging on detection of drive when installing Windows XP

Installing Windows XP on a SATA hard drive is not a straight-forward task as Windows XP does not recognize the SATA drive. In order to install operating systems such as Windows XP on SATA drives, the latest SATA drivers are required.Download SATA drivers for the motherboard from the website and integrate them with the XP installation CD using software such as nLite. SATA drivers can also be installed as third party drivers; you will be prompted during the installation process. Without proper SATA drivers, installing Windows XP on a SATA hard drive is not possible as SATA mode would have to be disabled in the BIOS to continue with the installation.
Installing Windows XP on a Serial ATA hard drive is not an easy task, because the system does not recognize SATA drivers at startup. Windows XP Pro SP2 fares a little better with SATA drivers, but here is what can be done in cases where the driver is not recognized.

SECOND HARD DRIVE NOT RECOGNIZED

Change the settings of you IDE drives in your BIOS. Set your secondary boot device to HDD1. Also make sure that your primary HDD is set to master and the secondary HDD is slave. The jumper is found at the back of the hard drive where you connect the power and IDE cables. Try this and post back as to how it went..

Have you tried right clicking on the drive and going into properties. Click on security option and make sure that all the permissions for the drive are active with the exception of special permissions. Also look at the advanced security settings and make sure that you have full control permissions. Hope this helps.

This doesn't require downloading anything, installing anything, or holding your mouth in a certain way.

1) Plug the drive into power and into your Vista PC's USB port.
2) When the 'Found New Hardware' wizard pops up, click the recommended option. When it says it can't find the drivers, select 'Show me other options', and then Browse your computer for drivers. Choose the C:\ drive, and click next.**

**The key here is that Windows Vista comes pre-installed with the drivers for the Maxtor external hard drives. So they're on your PC, even if the Wizard tells you they're not.

4) Wait a few minutes, and yo will see a window that reads, "The software for this device has been successfully installed," and now it will appear as a drive letter under 'Computer'.

thanks RP

Maxtor OneTouch II 300Gb can't recover data after a system restore

Hi,

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

The way I solved my problem was to make sure when I restored Windows to the default settings that I did it up to the same support packs and hot fixes then when backing up the system with the Maxtor HD. It took me many days to figure this out... was written it the Maxtor HD documentation and it works fine.

Hope this helps.
