Shell_error UMAX 2000P Scanner

While scanning a document using a Umax 2000P scanner which is operating in Window XP sp4 and NTFS I received a Shell_error. The desktop's computer screen went blue and communication between the PC and the scanner was lost the scanner icon in the taskbar had a red circle with a forward slash through it. The way I re-established the communication link was through unplugging the scanner from the power connection and the PC allowing the capacitor to discharge. Unplugging the PC from it's power source, reconnecting the scanner to the PC and reconnecting it's power cord. After doing this I was able to use the scanner without any error occuring. I then ran an error report and sent it off to Microsoft. The reply I received back said the error was caused by the Umax 2000P Scanner, and that I needed to notify Umax Technologies for a solution.
