Question about Iomega 32936 120 GB Network Hard Drive

USB connection not working

The USB cable got stepped on and now the PC won't recognize that anything is connected. I checked the USB port on the PC and it's fine. I changed USB cables to see if it was the cable. No luck. Geek Squad tested it and couldn't get it gecognized either. I can hear the drive spinning. I think the USB input jack on the back of the drive got messed up. The cable does not fit securely into the input anymore. Any suggestions? I'm not an electroinics guy and if I do get the unit open I won't know what needs to be done.

Your best bet especially considering the low cost of these units is to just take the unit apart (take off the bumpers and remove the screws). Once apart you'll see either a 2.5 or 3.5 standard hard drive. Just put this in a new external drive cage and continue on. You can get most of them for around 40 dollars or less. I would recommend Ultra, Vantec Nexstar Series, Iogear or similar brands as their support and documentation is good for people who are not used to doing this.

I have a 24" Dell monitor with built-in USB and SD sockets. Sometimes I have had problems with these not being responsive. This usually comes down to electrical connection.

You should do these in order, also testing for USB port availability at each step .
#1 is the monitor powered up? (USB is active only when monitor is switched on with power button on front of bezel)
#2 check that the USB cable at both ends is plugged in! (you need electrical connectivity)
#3 check that the USB port on the PC can see another device like a memory stick

#4 check your PC's software (drivers must be loaded and the USB port recognized)

My computer won't recognise my USB cable (code 43 error)

Its maybe the printer is not compatible with your computer, will to try several steps to determine a solution,
1 try another USB to see if it recognizes it,
2 download and install the driver from the printer manufacturer
3 try another USB device into the same USB port to see if it recognizes it if it does then the USB on your computer works as it should,
if it does then the fault is either software or the printer compatibility.
4 follow step 2 if the problem persist then the answer is your printer is not compatible and will need to order one that works for your system.

Pc doesnt detect/read portable HDD, but a USB connection appears on the task bar

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and devices (though not always)

A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems similar steps may be adapted to suit.

1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability

2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)

3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.

4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.

5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especialy true if you move a HUB to another port

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further

My computer does not recognize it. It used to work, but now it won't do anything when I put a cd or dvd in it. It also has the light scribe feature. It only came with Nero cd, no intstallation cd.

If you suspect a cable NEVER get one longer than the one you want to replace

If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues it may well be due to the device itself or a weakened usb port, a loose usb port.

To remedy the last two consider a new usb card if it for a PC

What should I do if my PC still won't recognize the camera after I reinstalled the USB drivers?

If the camera is still not recognized after the USB driver has been re-installed, one of the following situations may apply. "PC Camera" may be selected as the USB setting on the digital camera. Change the USB setting to DSC or select DSC in USB MODE. (This only applies to models with a USB Setting or USB MODE option in the SETUP screen.) Does the LCD monitor on the digital camera show that the USB connection is active (USB, DSC or a USB symbol with an arrow, etc.)? If not, the digital camera and PC may not be connected correctly. Check the items listed below. a) Restart the PC and reconnect the USB cable. b) If the PC has multiple USB ports, connect the cable to a different USB port. If steps a) and b) have both been tried and there is still no USB connection indicator displayed on the LCD monitor, there may be a problem with the digital camera or USB cable. Contact an authorized Fujifilm service center and ask them to check the digital camera together with the USB cable. Refer to the Digital Equipment Repair page for information such as the procedure for requesting checks and the locations of authorized Fujifilm service outlets. The USB driver may not be installed correctly. Download the USB driver from the Digital Camera Downloads page and re-install the driver The camera may not be recognized correctly if it is connected to an added USB interface board or via a USB hub. Always connect the camera directly to the USB port on the PC.
