Sometimes it is easiest to start over. In the case of the popular iPod, clearing the hard drive is the easiest way to remove the files and restore the drive. The process is rather basic using the Apple iTunes software. Once your 120 GB iPod is restored, you can quickly sync all of your songs saved on your computer back onto the iPod. Properly complete the restoration process and enjoy your revitalized iPod. Open the iTunes application on your computer. If you do not yet have the iTunes application, you can download it from Apple's website for free. From there you can easily download and install it. Open the folders on your computer which contain your saved music files and drag and drop them into iTunes. If prompted to convert to M4a, select "Convert." Connect your 120GB iPod to the computer using the provided USB cable. Click the "Restore" button on the main screen in iTunes, then click "Restore" a second time once prompted to initiate the restore process. Click the "Next" option, then "OK" once the restoration is complete. Your music will no longer be on your iPod, but will remain in your iTunes library. Click the "Sync" button on the bottom left side of the iTunes screen to sync the music library with the iPod.

The message does not indicate that there is an issue with the iPod but that that iTunes was unable to read the iPod software update it uses to restore or update your iPod. You can delete the folder containing the iPod software update files so iTunes can download a new copy of the iPod software update.
Here are the steps to take if you get this message:
Eject iPod and quit iTunes. Use Disk Utility in Mac OS X or run chkdsk in Windows to verify there are no other issues on your hard drive. Locate the iPod Software Updates folder: In Mac OS X, the folder is /Users/username/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates In Windows Vista, the folder is C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates In Windows XP and Windows 2000, the folder is C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates
Note: If you don't see the files in Windows, turn on the Show hidden files option. Windows Vista: Open Computer and choose Folder and Search Options from the Organize menu. Windows XP and 2000: Open My Computer and click Folder Options from the Tools menu. Click the View tab. In the Advanced Settings pane, select the "Show hidden files and folders" button. Click OK. Drag the iPod Software Updates folder to the Trash or Recycle Bin. Connect iPod and open iTunes. You will need to be connected to the Internet to download the files.

It is best to remove off all the files from your IPOD and then reset the player. Now using the media convertor for Apple ipods- itunes- you can convert and copy all the safe files to the player . Once done the player must work without hanging and if not there is fault within the memory or processor. Download itunes from the Apple website.
The exclamation mark next to a title in iTunes means that iTunes
cannot locate the song associated with that title (original file cannot
be found). The cause for this is an incorrect setting of iTunes
preferences when copying iPod songs.
Before copying your iPod songs, setup your iTunes preferences as
follows
Open iTunes preferences (in the Edit menu)
Select the Advanced tab.
Make sure the box next to "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when
adding to library" is checked.
What I would do is restore your ipod. Here is how to do that:
Connect the iPod to your computer with the USB cable that came with your iPod, and open iTunes.
After a few moments, you should see the iPod appear in the left panel of iTunes, under Devices.
Click once on the name of the iPod under Devices, and you should see a summary of your iPod appear in iTunes.
Click on Restore, and iTunes will start reformatting your iPod.
After
your iPod has been reformatted, you will probably be prompted to plug
it into a wall outlet to complete the restore process.
After
you plug your iPod into a wall outlet via a wall charger, you will be
able to transfer all of your files back onto your iPod. Connect your
iPod to your computer again, and your iTunes will sync all your files.
You should then be able to use your iPod to listen to music, watch videos, or view photos without any problems.
reformat your ipod, if you installed itunes via disc or from file, you should have the option in itunes to restore your ipod to factory settings. If you have songs on your ipod that arnt on your computer, you will need to copy them off the ipod before you restore your ipod.
To copy music off an ipod that is YOURS (in XP) go to my computer>click on your ipod> then go to tools>folder options>View TAB>and click on the option "show hidden files and folders". Then there should be a folder somwhere in your ipod (depending on what ipod you have) that says music. Copy that folder to the desktop and filter through all of the folders inside it for your music.
ok...you are connect via usb? when using limewire, window media or itunes,,,,go to options on all them and change the directory where you like to store and retrieve files from...now for the files that you already have on the primary hard drive....go to my computer..you see both drives internal (is your c) and the external is ?) find the music on the c drive ..open it..cut & paste (or click & drag) to the new drive ....to copy this music onto your ipod...make sure you have the latest itunes version (WWW.APPLE.COM) once you have this on the desktop let it scan for all the music on pc....now plug ipod to pc...20-30 seconds your ipod will show up on itunes...look on the bottom of itunes left side (u see the ur ipod)...look up and click on the music folder on pc drive and all the music should now be showing too...click on that same folder drag down to the ipods music folder.......let it load up...it might take awile depending on how much you got .....not never ever pull ipod out always eject the ipod .......then unplug it............................
