I carry a small 8gb usb flash drive on my keychain for situations just like this....you can get them cheap now online or in a local store.....i keep full versions of windows, linux, other necessary repair and recovery software, and most importantly, all drivers that seem important enough to hang onto additional copies. Go here and download the drivers for your device and store them in a flash drive since any computer can read the embedded drivers of these drives......and next time you have a system ask for the drivers, pop your keychain flash drive into the most available usb port and select the drive to be scanned for drivers and install........doing this now will provide you with the ability and flexibility needed to work with higher end and recently released components.
GOOD LUCK AND PLS RATE THIS POST!!!!!!! :D

Cant see my passport external drive on new windows 8 laptop

Try unplugging from usb and plugging it back in. Also, you may need a SAS driver for your computer to recognize the drive. Some drives have internal encryption and require a driver before the computer recognizes them. Check the Mfg website to see whether this drive requires one.

Hard disk not detected

Try plugging the enclosure's usb to another USB slot. If the computer still will not read it, then the enclosure itself might be defective and not the actual harddisk that is inside.

To verify this, try to mount the harddisk to another enclosure and test. If the enclosure is still under warranty, you can return it back to save repair costs.

When I connect WD 250 GB external harddisk ..I am getting error message" USB device Not recognized due to malfuction"..please guide me my laptop is toshiba and operating system is windows xp

Please trouble shoot by trying the device on another laptop.

If it works on another system, it simply means it is not compatible with yours and you have to get a device that is compatible with your toshiba system.

Good try.

My computer does not recognize WD Passport WD2500XMS-00

I use a USB extender cable so I do not have to get down on the ground and plug stuff into my USB ports behind my computer. Everything that I own works through this cable except the WD passport drive. (It is a 2.0 USB cable at that so that is not the issue, plus 1.0 should theoretically still work, just not at 2.0 speeds)

SO...I tried to plug it directly into the USB port on the back of my computer and it worked instantly.

Other people have reported a fix after finding that their cable was loose. This USB cable that comes with the drive seems to be picky for some reason. Perhaps these are faulty cables somehow. Hopefully this will help some people.

External Toshiba 400GB HDD not recognized on my Dell CPx J650GT

New hard drives need to be formatted! So go into the control panel switch to classic view, ( if you are still using category view for the control panel ) open administrative tools, then open computer management. Next open disk management. In disk management your new drive will show as raw, you will be give the option of formatting the drive, select primary partition and format in NTFS.
This will then format the drive, when this has finished your new drive will appear in my computer.
