Question about Sony CDP-C505 5-Disc CD Changer

Player does not recognize any discs

Any help on this would be appreciated. This Sony CD player had been on a shelf for a year or so as it was working sporadically then and I finally replaced it with a DVD/DVR/VHS unit. But, I missed the 5-disc feature so I thought I'd take another look at it. I took the lid off the player, loaded it with CDs and closed the carousel. It recognized the discs and I started forwarding through the discs and tracks and no problem. I then took it over to my receiver and hooked it up. The player would not recognize the CDs. Should you be able to see the light from the laser with the lid off? I turned off the lights in the house and could not see any light coming from the sensor. So, seemed to work for a few minutes, but then nothing. Any advice? Thanks.

Otacon, Given the price of new units these days, is it worth it to replace the lens unit? Is that something I can do myself or is it a job for a technician? Thanks.

Hi,

If you don't see any signs of the laser then it's most likely that the lens unit has malfunctioned or simply "died" (but in your case the laser still shows some signs of life since you said it recognized your discs). You need to get that replaced to have your unit up and running again. Sorry...

It could be dust, so try using a lens cleaner (but it's highly unlikely). Try it just to be sure.

The problem with replacing the lens is the fact that the part might not be available anymore (your unit is relatively old.). Suppose you do find the part, it might not be cheap since it is rare. Suppose u get the part, if you don't have experience it could be hard. I would recommend getting a new one.

Hello
Replace the flat strip wire that connects laser pickup unit to main board. If it does not help you, replace laser pickup unit with same typa and number. OK.

The CD player is not recognizing my CD disc. It states the CD drive is empty even though all 3 have the disc in.

If you already tried it with a known good clean cd, try using lense cleaner. If that do not work you are out of luck because that means the laser assembly is defective already, and replacing that is very difiicult, whats more they are an expensive part, costing anywhere from 50 to over a hundred bucks. Lastly they are hard to find for a particualr model.

I have the same problem and it's due to dirt!
I'm going to try using compressed air, but -
this definitely works:

:) Seriously:

tilt the cd player to a 45 degree angle (flat, basically - as if they tray were horizontal.)

I had my player for 10 or 12 years, and this problem is only coming up now. My house gets very dusty.

Also - vertical load disc players are hard to clean. X_X (inside the disc tray)

I love this stereo too!
I don't want to have to go out and buy another stereo!

RCA RP-9515 stereo, CD player won't play

RD probably stands for "Reading Disc" and ND probably stands for "No Disc". If the CD player doesn't recognize any discs, then either the laser is dead or the motor has died. MOst likely you will have to replace the unit.

CD Player will not play, just moved the tray in, then out and stops.

Take off the metal cabinet cover, then find the lens on the exchanger and blow it off with some compressed air. If it still won't work, then try a different disc (commercially made, like from Wal-Mart) because the disc might be unreadable
