Hello , i have a problem with my 1996 ford ranger 2.3 standard. we got this truck from a guy that said the timing slipped or belt broke, he tore it down and the belt was not broke, but worn some, he put a new belt on it and he put it back together and it wasnt in time, so he tryed starting it and it woulnt hardly run or have any power, so he tore it back down and he broke the harmonic balancer, so we got the truck tore down , we bought a harmonic balancer from salvage yard , put it on , timed it up ( we think) and it will start , but sometimes it dont want to idle and some times it idles good for a few seconds , no power , it kinda chugs and kinda pops when you try to drive it , but no power, we had a mini computer put on it it says codes 1131 and 1116 we are at out wits end trying to figure out whats wrong , ppl say cam shaft sensor , some say crankshaft sensor, dead plugs , coil. can someone please help with this headache???

Code 1131 refers to the upstream O2 sensor before the cat converter.(NO heated sensor detected)
code 1116 means the water temp signals are out of range.(Maybe its unplugged?)

The codes for the O2 can also mean a Lean condition which may be caused by a vacuum leak.

Regardless of the electronics you should be able to do a compression test and figure out if the valve timing is off.

Remember to wipe the memory after you change things to see if they helped.

2003 ford ranger need timingmarks my beltbroke

I've never done one on a Ranger, but most timing gears have alignment marks that you line up before you install the belt. Don't forget to replace the belt tensioner while you're at it.

The pulse module every salvage yard has this, these dont fail its known as a internal govenor and by the way there is no module for these leave it alone I really doubt you have a problem with this device its well protected the wiring goes into and is part of the multi fuction switch, If a Auto tech scanned your car he or she would enter what they call a GEM module and your ranger doesnt have one you have a wiring problem

Hi; My name is Dean Ford. I drive a 1996 Ford Ranger. My belt broke the other day. It runs all P/S A/C . It is an all in one belt. I have been trying to find the diagram. But the one that came up is the...

Actually, you don't need a diagram to replace the broken belt.

All serpentine belt pulleys are either smooth or grooved.
All serpentine belts have a smooth or grooved side.

Just thread the new belt loosely onto the smooth belt to smooth pulleys, and grooved belt side to grooved pulleys, until the last pulley is encountered, which is the tensioner pulley.

Use a breaker bar to move the tensioner pulley to a position where the belt can be easily slipped on, and you're done.

Is it possible that when the belt broke you may have damaged the engine (bent valve). Try advancing or retarding the camshaft sprocket by one tooth and see if that makes a difference.
