Samsung S730 - Battery problems

My Samsung S730 has recently been running on it's in-bulit battery, but the charge has run down. I have put disposable batteries in, but can't get the camera to stay on for long enough to switch the option to run on these rather than the in-built. I tried plugging it into the computer, but it is not recognising the conection. Please help.
