Quantum CXL The needle will not pick up bobbin thread. seems to hit medal. It is not a 1000 model It was bought 11-01-95.

Are you able to remove the bobbin case from the machine? Remove the needle and then work at gently removing any knots of thread in the bobbin area until you are able to remove the bobbin case.

Once the machine is cleaned of all the excess thread, lint, etc., install a BRAND NEW NEEDLE, reinstall the bobbin, and rethread the top thread. Then retest your machine on regular woven fabric. If it stitches, then you are probably okay. If it will not pick up the bobbin thread, then the machine is probably knocked out of time.

FWIW, vinyl presents issues when sewing. A roller or teflon foot may help. Also, placing tissue paper between the presser foot and vinyl could be beneficial. Look at using a top-stitch needle to prevent the thread from hanging up on the vinyl. Search for web sites or videos on how to sew vinyl.

All Singer models would have arrows/numbers to guide your top threading from the spool pin to top thread guide, for most machine start from your thread spool pin, to a thread guide follow arrow down then up into the take up lever and down to the needle thread guide then into the needle hole. Assuming you have wind and install the bobbin thread into the bobbin case, turn your hand wheel towards you makes the needle bar goes down,keep on turning till the needle bar is fully up again, pull the end of the top thread to pick out the bobbin/bottom thread. With your material/fabric under the presser feet, apply the presser feet lever down, you are ready to sew.

First, try a brand new needle. If it was damaged by the previous activity, then it could be causing both problems.

check the needle to make sure that it's inserted correctly, the flat side of the needle goes to the back of the machine,, and make sure the needle goes all the way up into the needle cavity .

make sure the bobbin is correctly inserted

clean under the needle plate area & in bobbin area for loose threads or lint

if none of the above work & the needle is still hitting something then it 's a great possibility it's out of time & needs to be serviced, cause the needle should not be hitting anything when it goes down.

if loops appear on underside of fabric, make sure machine is threaded correctly (check instruction manual for threading). when presser foot is resting on feed dogs, needle thread should be quite tight when pulled through needle (needle should bend a little). if thread does not feel tight, check threading again and ensure thread is between tension discs (presser foot should be up for threading and then down to check tension). if threading is good and tension seting is at 5 but still not tight enough check no htread is caught in tension assembly. if tension assembly is clear try tightening needle thread tension to 6,7 or 8 and see if that helps.

if the above is correct check for damage to the needle hole in the needle plate and polish with fine emery tape if necessary.

if you still have trouble best see a technician for possible repair to bobbin case or hook/shuttle mechanism which you may damage trying to fix yourself.

do you have a book, refer to threading. This machine threads differently than most, threads like a 221 featherweight. Needle goes in backwards, and threads backwards. in wrong and you can have problems, also threading can cause your problem if you have missed tension or a thread guide. great little machine

your machine threads from right to left. the needle flat spot faces left. big loopy things means that the upper part of the machine is not threaded properly. as far as the needle hitting the bobbin case, it sounds as if someone removed the hook (part that holds the case) and put it back on 180 degrees off.

Your needle is probably to long or you need to open it more

Is it possible the bobbin is in backwards? I have also found mine to be fussy with cheap bobbins.
