Problem with Windows XP recognizing Creative Sound Card

I have a Dell Deminsion 4600 with XP Home Edition of Windows. I am trying to upgrade from integrated sound to Creative Labs Sound Blaster Live! 24-bit Sound Card. I have installed and un-installed numerous times but can not get it to work properly. My PC will recognize a mutimedia audio controller as being a new hardware. I can install the drivers correctly and under device manager the Sound Blaster shows to be enabled and working correctly. I have bios set to ignore my integrated sound. However, when I go to Control Panel/Sounds and Audio Devices/Audio it does not recognize any sound devices. The device is in error when I try to play any sounds. My Creative Diagnotics fails Windows Multimedia tests. My Direct Sound test passes. Can you help?

It sounds like a software problem. Though you did the right thing by entering the bios & disabling the onboard sound. That should have been enough. Did you uninstall the old intergrated sound drivers before adding the 24bit card? Just about all the drivers & upgrades for your 4600 through Dell is Creative software & thats why your having a tough time. I would put everything back to how it was. Re-enable the intergrated sound & reboot! Run system restore & check that every thing is running right!! Look at this dell web site for the sound drivers you have at this link:
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&ServiceTag=&SystemID=DIM_P4_4600&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=
If you must, install a upgrade for your intergrated sound. Just so you can uninstall it after a reboot. Re disable the sound in the bios. Do not install your new card yet. While back in windows device manager you should be missing a PCI device. Shut down install the new sound card. Hopefully windows will want the drivers & all runs fine. If still no it could be a bad card (i know what your thinking but it's possible). The only thing left is the regestry is using the wrong PCI device.

According to Microsoft, Sound Blaster 1040 fully compatible with Win 7 and does not need any extra software. Use Windows 7 Update and check for updates, under optional as well.

Pci input device and mulitimedia audio controller please help

Hello michael_bilb

This is what comes up in device manager under "other devices" in windows xp.

The reason is that your computer uses creative sound blaster live 24bit sound card.

To get read of that you need to install the sound card driver. It can be downloaded from Dell support on their web site.

If you can not get it from dell try this link
http://support.creative.com/Products/product_list.aspx?catID=1&CatName=Sound+Blaster#

on the screen click on "live"
in the "archive products" column click on the last item "sound blaster lave value"
you should be able to download your driver from their.

Good luck

Dell Dimension 4600 creative sound blaster card

It sounds like you may have broken your sound card. I had the same problem when I tried to digitise my old 4-track recordings.
I tried the broken card in another PC, found that it was not working, so I went out and bought a new sound card.
