Refrigerator not working, freezer works great

My kenmore refrigerator isn't staying cool at all - the temperature inside is 55 degrees, but the freezer is working great. It can't be the compressor because there is just one compressor for both fridge and freezer, right?

Yes, only one compressor. The refrigeration system actually only cools the freezer. Then there is a vent from the freezer to the refrigerator that allows the cold air to circulate to the refrigerator side. That little dial you turn to set the refrigerator temperature is actually only open or closing that vent. The dial for the freezer temperature is an actual thermostat that operates the compressor.

The temperature of the freezer should be between 0 and -10 degrees Fahrenheit. If it is in or near this range and the refrigerator is only at 55 degrees (the refrig should be at 38 to 45 degrees) then check for blockage or icing where the air from the freezer circulates into the refrigerator.

If the freezer is not in or near the 0 to -10 degrees then you have a refrigeration problem. First thing to do is clean the condenser coil on the bottom of the unit using rags and a shop-vac. Be careful of the wiring and tubing down there plus the sharp metal.
Unplug the unit before cleaning.

Otherwise, you'll need to call a refrigerator service technician to repair the refrigeration system for you.

If this helps you, please select YES to one of the first two ratings questions. Thank you, and Good Luck.

Can any make of freezer be used in garage. Told only Beco

Refrigerators are designed to be used inside at typical to normal household temperatures. The problem with refrigerators are if the ambient temperatures drop down below 55 Degrees F Food in freezer will begin to defrost when the temperature in the garage goes below 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The fresh food section may begin to freeze food slightly below this temperature. If you live in an area where the outside ambient temperature does not get below 70 degrees F or 20 degrees C then the refrigerator will work fine but to have it located in an area where temperatures drop well below this you could lose some food. There are heaters that can be adapted to the compressor if used in an unheated area. Hope this helps, Sea Breeze

Have a kenmore refrigerator freezer works but not refrigerator

You mean "How to Fix a Kenmore Refrigerator That Is Not Cold But the Freezer Is Good?"

Well this what i say,
Kenmore combination refrigerator and freezers combine the short- and long-term food storage options in a single unit. There are some occasions when the refrigerator compartment might appear to be malfunctioning while the freezer box stays cool. Ruling out these occasions ensures you have done everything you can to correct the problem before calling for a technician if necessary.

1.Verify that the temperature controls for the refrigerator compartment are properly configured. Tap the "^" or "v" buttons beside the refrigerator's LCD temperature display until "38," the ideal temperature, appears. The compartment could have been set too warm. Allow 24 hours for the the appliance to reach 38 degrees Fahrenheit.

2 Check that the refrigerator compartment door closes completely, objects inside the appliance could be holding the door ajar. When cool air is allowed to escape, the internal temperature rises. Cracked, holed or corroded door seals may also raise the refrigerator temperature.

3 Change how you use the refrigerator compartment; storing hot or warm food strains the appliance and causes a rise in internal temperatures. Do not prop open the door or leave it ajar for more than a few seconds at a time for the reasons outlined in Step 2.

4 Contact Kenmore if the refrigerator compartment remains too warm for your food. There may be a problem with the motor or any one of the other parts that regulate the temperature

Can you operate a refrigerator in a garage with out problems

Good day,
The high and low temperature range for a domestic refrigerator is 55 and 95 degrees. Above and below that issues will appear.
Above 95 degrees the compressor will be taxed badly, and will obviously shorten it's life.
Below 55 degrees it will not run enough to keep the freezer at decent temperatures, and because it stays off long periods of time, the oil in the compresser sump will thicken, making compressor starting difficult and once again shortening it's life.

It's done all the time but there is a cost long term.
