How to switch on Auto Flash in Auto mode

I just got a new canon rebel XTi 400D. In the full auto mode my flash does not pop up automatically. I do not know if I have pressed something by mistake while handling it in the beginning did the problem or not. Can anyone tell me how to switch the auto flash on in the auto mode?

Put the camera in "P" and press the flash button above the lens release. If the flash pops, than you probably just have too much light to need it when you are in auto. The flash button is not active in auto so if the xti doesn't want the flash in auto, u can't make it fire. If the flash button does not make the flash pop in "P", search this site for another post about flash not working and u will find that this could be the flash deactivation button in the hot shoe sticking. Not likely though with a new camera unless u have had a speedlite mounted alot.--

I found the answer and fixed my flash. Look on http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00ODWf

This will describe how, if you have been using a speedlite alot, than the little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent down thus constantly pressing down (toward the bottom of the camera) the small button which deactivates the pop-upHow to switch on Auto Flash in Auto mode - 1.gif flash even when the speedlite is not attached. Just bend the tab up a little with a jewler's screwdriver, turn the camera off and on and voila!! Fixed!!! Dan describes pushing the tab down, but on the xti, the tab needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch and fix the problem. Thanks to Dan D on photonet for saving me a service call.

In the auto mode every manual buttons are being override so it works automatically..its not compulsory that the flash will work every time... as the camera determines when to use it or not...

i suggest you to visit the service center

Internal flash pops up all the time

Is your camera always in the auto mode? Try to put the main dial to P. Your camera is almost automatic, but won't use the flash, unless you put it up yourself.
If your flash pops up, even when the camera is of, you have a mechanical problem. Something broke off.

I have a canon rebel xti and the flash pops up but doesn't flash even when its dark this is when the setting is in full auto. any ideas? could the "bulb" have broken?

The short answer is yes, that is possible. It's also possible there is a circuitry problem. You will want to verify by trying to use an external flash and making sure it still works. The flash assembly is replaceable if needed.

Good luck!

Thank you.

Be aware that the built in flash does not pop up automatically in all picture modes. Try it when in the different modes (on the mode dial) and see what I mean. Does it popo up when manually opened ?, (small button on front left hand side of the viewing pentaprism/flash housing.)

I just bought the 430ex II flash and it won't fire on my Rebel XTI.... i read the manual but I'm not sure whats wrong, have any advice?

I assume that flash is turned on. 430ex flash will fire automatically only in AUTO mode. On manual modes you mus manually force the flash to fire.
If flash doesn't fire at all, consider to claim the vendor or let the vendor to check the flash mounted on your camera.

Flash will automatically pop out only in AUTO mode, if the camera needs some additional lightning. In manual modes, you should use the flash button located at the left down side of the flash compartment, to manually force the flash to pop up

Looks like you need to take this to a camera store and have them check it over. I don't know of any setting that would cause what you describe.

Built in flash problem

most likely you have set the camera to the auto mode and you are shooting in a place with plenty of light.
your camera has a sensor which activates the flash when needed.
you can set the camera to the manual mode so that you can chose the flash to work even in the day.

Built-in flash does not work

DO NOT MESS with a new camera (or any other new equipment).
Take/send it back to the vendor, The purchaser has rights also. Number one it must work.
I don't know your location but in UK (& Europe) we have very strict consumer legislation.
