Cannot remove closed captioning from magnavox TV

Cannot remove closed captioning from Magnavox TV with universal remote. The only thing the universal remote will do is turn TV on & off, change channels and adjust volume. Satellite TV works just fine, just want to remove closed captioning. When looking at the menu options on the televison with the universal remote, cannot select any of the items on the list?
