Smart Cycle - Fisher Price

By SFC_Gunny on Dec 26, 2007

" "
Well, Santa messed up this year! We purchased a Smart Cycle from Target, and left it set up in the house while we visited family....when we returned, there it was, all set-up and ready from "Santa" for our 4 1/2 year old son. The system comes with one game cartridge...we turned on the unit, and my son followed the directions (while I was standing there) and then the problems started. First, the system completely locked up soon after he began peddling....then, the system would re-start. We changed to another cartridge, and the same problems. I've checked other sites, reviews, etc., and the only problems I've found are with the peddles coming loose, so I'm guessing this might just be a faulty system that needs to be exchanged?

Same Problem

Apr 16, 2009

-   Very frustrated -- purchased for my grandson last April --put it away because he was too young --just pulled it out again recently -- after several tries and replacing the batteries, finally got it to turn on. Once the game starts, the screen begins to garble after about 20 seconds , shuts down and won't start back until several attempts are made. Once it starts back, it goes through the same process again and shuts down.

I hope the 800 number will help.. If not, I won't buy anything else from Fisher Price -   tiltonfaye

-   We're having the same problem. All of a sudden, the game shuts down after just a few minutes. It doesn't matter which game cartridge. The batteries are fresh and the battery light is not on. Has anyone found the solution? -   Aunt C

-   My smart cycle was working fine, now when I turn it on, it has a split screen, half blue half black, is this the game or the cycle ? -   Guest

-   We are in the same boat as this was also a gift from Santa. We used it Christmas day and then the next time we went to turn it back on, it wouldn't come on. So, as like everyone else, I changed the batteries, thinking we left it on. That didn't work. I did find however, if u give it a good push on the floor, it will come on, for it to only freeze up the first second you turn the handlebars. I am very disappointed as this was the big hoorah of all my sons gifts this year. Please let me know if there is a solution.-   Guest

We are on our second one and are having a different problem.
It will work for a while and then when the kid hops on again to play we only get sound and no image on screen.
We had the same issue with the first one.

I had similar problems. It was hard to turn on, and the toy will shut itself off mysteriously. The power on/off switch was loose and making bad contacts. I took out the seven screws underneath the grey control console. Turns out the circuit board along with the power switch were not securely fastened ($100 for this?!!). Tightening a few screws so the power switch would not jiggle, and snapping the console back on, problem solved within 5 minutes.

If your games are freezing up, or you are getting a garbled screen, or a split screen (solid color block on one side, black on the other)......spray some windex on the circuit board of the game cartridge and clean with q-tips. I know it sounds crazy; but I took the smart cycle apart this weekend trying to diagnose the problem. Ours kept having the above problems, and it seemed to me like a bad connection between the game cartridge and the "slot". Nothing worked until I finally tried the windex as a last ditch effort. WORKED LIKE A CHARM. Tried a game, didn't worked, cleaned with windex, works now no problem. This worked for all six of my game cartridges, when none of them would work before.

Great idea! The kids love it - when it works. We purchased this as a Christmas present in 2007 and have had problems with the unit shutting off, locking up in the middle of a game or just not starting up all along.

On our unit the game cartridge does not always slide in all the way and when it wiggles loose the game quits or freezes. Removing the cartridge and pushing it in a couple of times seems to fix the problem. The same procedure seems to have fixed a problem were it would not start up after not being used for a long time.

Likewise, the power switch requires jiggling quite often to get the unit to power up and stay powered up.

It seems to me that quality took a back seat on this product. I would have gladly paid a bit more for something that worked reliably.

Before you call the phone number above or take out seven screws, try changing the batteries. Our system was powering off and it turns out that is a function of older batteries.

We seem to have the same problem everyone else has. We bought the Smart Cycle for our son Christmas of 2007. He was three at the time and got frustrated because he didn't seem to have the coordination to pedal, steer etc so we put it away until this past Fall. When we took it back out he LOVED it but then the problems started. It won't turn on! At first we thought the batteries ran out (too bad for us because we threw out a couple dozen batteries before we caught on). For the money we paid it is so disappointing. My son has probably gotten 2 hours of enjoyment from this "Smart" Cycle. Shame on you Fisher Price for not making a better product!!

powered up fine on christmas eve night, used it for 20 minutes. next morning, it seemed that the batteries were dead as the leds only came on at a very low level. changed batteries, but problem persists. getting ready to do some dismantling before i trek all the way back to a probably-crowded toys-r-us that is 30 minutes away. wish me luck.

Right out of the box it did not work. I have tryed 8 brand new batteries, rechecked all connections and anything else the trouble shooter has suggested and nothinbg has worked. Did I mention the consumer office is closed today? This toy is all my kid has been asking about for months! Two things I will never forget from today: The look on my kids face when she saw it, and the look on her face when it didn't work. Thanks to FP for an unforgetable Christmas.

PS - How can you get away with selling a piece of junk like this, especially for the price we all paid, when you know about the technical issues they have?

We are having the same problem. The system works for a while and then when you want to switch to a new cartridge, it won't go back on with out a great deal of turning on and off and pushing the games in a certain way. It's very frustrating!!!!

KEEPS RESTARTING

Comment by Guest, posted on Nov 14, 2008

Thought the smart cycle was a great gift for my 3 year old son but it turned out to be very frustrating for both him and myself. The toy always turns off after about 45 seconds for an unknown reason from the first day we got it. This happens with different games and sometimes says goodbye and then shutsdown. Would really like to get it working, because my son would really enjoy playing with it.

So frustrated with this toy--we've tried it on two different televisions the games lock up after my son's been riding for about 10 seconds. I am definetely going to call the 1-800 number today and see if I can fix this.

We have been having problems with the Smart Cycle suddenly powering off as well. Sometimes we can't get it to turn on, we're about to give up on it, and then it suddenly powers back up. We've replaced the batter and gone back through and "re-assembled" it with no luck.

Got it for Christmas. My son rides it for about three minutes and then it just shuts off. REALLY ANNOYING! We are taking it back I am don't recommend anyone buy one. A great idea... a horrible manufactured product.

game shuts off and on, seems to go off worse when turn to the left

We're having problems following the Smart Cycle. Our twins played this for less than one day. We noticed some "flickering" or stalling. Then while they were playing it everything just quit - including our wide screen TV. We tried new batteries in the Smart Cycle. It acts like there is a short in the on/off switch. We still can't get the wide screen TV to work, at all !!!!

Comment by gsl2, posted on Dec 29, 2007

No power to the Smart Cycle.

I purchased this product as a gift from Santa and I also had similar problems. I actually got it to work for about a minute and it would not turn back on after that. I replaced the batteries twice. I am going to take it back! I told my son he can get games for his leapster in exchange.

Comment by Guest, posted on Dec 26, 2007

we had same problem. it's a great toy, but after we turn it on, choose our car and begin racing, before my kids can even get 2 letters it shuts off with a "goodbye" and has to be restarted. i'm hoping an exchange of the product will do away with the problem. i even changed out the batteries with no success.
