Smart Cycle - Fisher Price

Well, Santa messed up this year! We purchased a Smart Cycle from Target, and left it set up in the house while we visited family....when we returned, there it was, all set-up and ready from "Santa" for our 4 1/2 year old son. The system comes with one game cartridge...we turned on the unit, and my son followed the directions (while I was standing there) and then the problems started. First, the system completely locked up soon after he began peddling....then, the system would re-start. We changed to another cartridge, and the same problems. I've checked other sites, reviews, etc., and the only problems I've found are with the peddles coming loose, so I'm guessing this might just be a faulty system that needs to be exchanged?

we had same problem. it's a great toy, but after we turn it on, choose our car and begin racing, before my kids can even get 2 letters it shuts off with a "goodbye" and has to be restarted. i'm hoping an exchange of the product will do away with the problem. i even changed out the batteries with no success.

  • Anonymous Dec 27, 2007

I purchased this product as a gift from Santa and I also had similar problems. I actually got it to work for about a minute and it would not turn back on after that. I replaced the batteries twice. I am going to take it back! I told my son he can get games for his leapster in exchange.

  • gsl2 Dec 29, 2007

No power to the Smart Cycle.

  • carpiesboys Jan 05, 2008

We're having problems following the Smart Cycle. Our twins played this for less than one day. We noticed some "flickering" or stalling. Then while they were playing it everything just quit - including our wide screen TV. We tried new batteries in the Smart Cycle. It acts like there is a short in the on/off switch. We still can't get the wide screen TV to work, at all !!!!

  • michael d Jan 08, 2008

game shuts off and on, seems to go off worse when turn to the left

  • LanceT Jan 27, 2008

Got it for Christmas. My son rides it for about three minutes and then it just shuts off. REALLY ANNOYING! We are taking it back I am don't recommend anyone buy one. A great idea... a horrible manufactured product.

  • suesyq Apr 07, 2008

We have been having problems with the Smart Cycle suddenly powering off as well. Sometimes we can't get it to turn on, we're about to give up on it, and then it suddenly powers back up. We've replaced the batter and gone back through and "re-assembled" it with no luck.

  • ecwhitt May 23, 2008

So frustrated with this toy--we've tried it on two different televisions the games lock up after my son's been riding for about 10 seconds. I am definetely going to call the 1-800 number today and see if I can fix this.

  • Anonymous Nov 14, 2008

Thought the smart cycle was a great gift for my 3 year old son but it turned out to be very frustrating for both him and myself. The toy always turns off after about 45 seconds for an unknown reason from the first day we got it. This happens with different games and sometimes says goodbye and then shutsdown. Would really like to get it working, because my son would really enjoy playing with it.

  • Anonymous Nov 23, 2008

    KEEPS RESTARTING

  • lgallen Dec 05, 2008

We are having the same problem. The system works for a while and then when you want to switch to a new cartridge, it won't go back on with out a great deal of turning on and off and pushing the games in a certain way. It's very frustrating!!!!

  • Anonymous Dec 25, 2008

Right out of the box it did not work. I have tryed 8 brand new batteries, rechecked all connections and anything else the trouble shooter has suggested and nothinbg has worked. Did I mention the consumer office is closed today? This toy is all my kid has been asking about for months! Two things I will never forget from today: The look on my kids face when she saw it, and the look on her face when it didn't work. Thanks to FP for an unforgetable Christmas.

PS - How can you get away with selling a piece of junk like this, especially for the price we all paid, when you know about the technical issues they have?

  • jdub86 Dec 28, 2008

powered up fine on christmas eve night, used it for 20 minutes. next morning, it seemed that the batteries were dead as the leds only came on at a very low level. changed batteries, but problem persists. getting ready to do some dismantling before i trek all the way back to a probably-crowded toys-r-us that is 30 minutes away. wish me luck.

  • lwgibby Jan 01, 2009

We seem to have the same problem everyone else has. We bought the Smart Cycle for our son Christmas of 2007. He was three at the time and got frustrated because he didn't seem to have the coordination to pedal, steer etc so we put it away until this past Fall. When we took it back out he LOVED it but then the problems started. It won't turn on! At first we thought the batteries ran out (too bad for us because we threw out a couple dozen batteries before we caught on). For the money we paid it is so disappointing. My son has probably gotten 2 hours of enjoyment from this "Smart" Cycle. Shame on you Fisher Price for not making a better product!!

  • Anonymous Jan 18, 2009

We are in the same boat as this was also a gift from Santa. We used it Christmas day and then the next time we went to turn it back on, it wouldn't come on. So, as like everyone else, I changed the batteries, thinking we left it on. That didn't work. I did find however, if u give it a good push on the floor, it will come on, for it to only freeze up the first second you turn the handlebars. I am very disappointed as this was the big hoorah of all my sons gifts this year. Please let me know if there is a solution.

  • Anonymous Jan 26, 2009

My smart cycle was working fine, now when I turn it on, it has a split screen, half blue half black, is this the game or the cycle ?

  • laskilz Feb 10, 2009

Have the same problem, the system stops in the middle of Thomas.

  • Aunt C Mar 31, 2009

We're having the same problem. All of a sudden, the game shuts down after just a few minutes. It doesn't matter which game cartridge. The batteries are fresh and the battery light is not on. Has anyone found the solution?

  • tiltonfaye Apr 16, 2009

Very frustrated -- purchased for my grandson last April --put it away because he was too young --just pulled it out again recently -- after several tries and replacing the batteries, finally got it to turn on. Once the game starts, the screen begins to garble after about 20 seconds , shuts down and won't start back until several attempts are made. Once it starts back, it goes through the same process again and shuts down.

I hope the 800 number will help.. If not, I won't buy anything else from Fisher Price

  • julmaine Dec 16, 2009

do we need a cartridge to turn on the game?

  • Aundreya Holland Jan 28, 2012

I bought a Smart Cycle for my granddtr. We are having the same problems. The system locks up seconds after she begins peddling. We have to manually re-start the game, only to have the same thing happen. After reading your comment, I checked the peddles. No problems with the peddles. It's the game.
    WE WERE JIPPED!!!!!!!!!!!11

If your games are freezing up, or you are getting a garbled screen, or a split screen (solid color block on one side, black on the other)......spray some windex on the circuit board of the game cartridge and clean with q-tips. I know it sounds crazy; but I took the smart cycle apart this weekend trying to diagnose the problem. Ours kept having the above problems, and it seemed to me like a bad connection between the game cartridge and the "slot". Nothing worked until I finally tried the windex as a last ditch effort. WORKED LIKE A CHARM. Tried a game, didn't worked, cleaned with windex, works now no problem. This worked for all six of my game cartridges, when none of them would work before.

WOWEEE!!! I have a dozen cartridges and only 2 have been working properly (most are 2 or 3 years old). The first one I polished did not work. But I went ahead and tried polishing another--it worked. After going through all of them, I had 3 that hadn't been fixed. I polished and dried them again...and again. Lo' and behold!!! They now work, too! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! My kids will be thirlled when they get home frmo school today.
BTW, if you "fix" a cartridge, but the colors/lights still flicker, just polish it again. Don't be afraid to really squirk the windex on directly. Just let dry thoroghly. This really works!

  • Lee Bohon Oct 17, 2011

Happened to me too! Our not-so-smart cycle started going waco with distorted images on the screen, no sound, etc. Wiggling the cartridge around would help. I was thinking it was a poor connector so I took mine apart and resoldered each pin on the cartridge connector. Didn't help. I should have thought of the obvious... CLEAN THE CARTRIDGES. With a little piece of fine grit sand paper and some contact cleaner I had, I went over all 5 game cartridges we have and PRESTO... it all works totally fine now.

Just had similar issues as above - no picture, picture w/ split screen, no games would function, freezing etc. It seems the less these units are used, the more the contacts on the game cartridge oxidize. I was ready to rip the bike unit apart, but thought I'd try burnishing the game cartridge contacts with a pencil eraser first before attempting to disassemble the unit. Worked like a charm. Use a small flat eraser or one of the add-on ones that comes to a point. Go over each side of the cartridge contacts for 30 seconds or so, then blow out the crumbs. You can use electronic contact spray cleaner as well if you want - I don't recommend windex. I used alcohol on a small cloth w/ a small screwdriver (carefully) or spray contact cleaner on the connector on the bike as well - just make sure the unit is off & the stuff dries for a minute or so before you power things back on.

banditm is correct. Thank you. I went to Radio Shack 3 or 4 weeks ago and bought some spray electronics cleaner. I sprayed it in the Smart Cycle plug in and was impressed. My children are using it again because it is reliable. (Finally)

I had similar problems. It was hard to turn on, and the toy will shut itself off mysteriously. The power on/off switch was loose and making bad contacts. I took out the seven screws underneath the grey control console. Turns out the circuit board along with the power switch were not securely fastened ($100 for this?!!). Tightening a few screws so the power switch would not jiggle, and snapping the console back on, problem solved within 5 minutes.

I bought the fisher price smart cycle from a thrift store for my grand daughter for 2.50. I thought if it was broken it would be cheaper to just get this fixed instead of buying a new one because the toy was in excellent condition and included 3 games. I followed your instructions and it played right away. This was a total surprise. Thank you so much for your solution. It saved me about 80.00 for a new one.

  • coqui74 Jun 22, 2011

I just brought this Smart Cycle back up from the basement; I put it there after I became so disgusted that the toy had died after just a few months use (screen was half black, half blue). Changed the batteries, tightened the screws under the grey console (as stated above), and also used a thin eraser to clean both sides of cartridges (as stated a few comments below). I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS WORKED! So happy that this online community was able to help me out.

I did this, and they told me that I have to mail them the large grey base of the cycle, and that I have to pay for that postage myself, and within a certain broad time span, they will send me a whole new cycle. They argued that I should have to pay for the postage there, because they are paying to send a whole new bike back. It makes sense to them that I should have to pay more for their defective product. Those dickheads better throw in an extra game. Preferably Shrek. My name is Talakai from Seattle. Shrek will do.

Great idea! The kids love it - when it works. We purchased this as a Christmas present in 2007 and have had problems with the unit shutting off, locking up in the middle of a game or just not starting up all along.

On our unit the game cartridge does not always slide in all the way and when it wiggles loose the game quits or freezes. Removing the cartridge and pushing it in a couple of times seems to fix the problem. The same procedure seems to have fixed a problem were it would not start up after not being used for a long time.

Likewise, the power switch requires jiggling quite often to get the unit to power up and stay powered up.

It seems to me that quality took a back seat on this product. I would have gladly paid a bit more for something that worked reliably.

try adding your own power supply to the bike i did that because i thought the batteries were kinda a dumb idea i grabbed a 4.5 volt supply i had laying around took the 4 screws off below were the cartridges go and cut the black and red wire drilled a hole in the side plugged it in now my smart cycle is smart it doesnt need batteries to operate maybe this will work for you.

1.5 volts X 4 d batteries = 6 volts i used a 350 mA supply this doesn't matter since the device will take what it needs from the supply. hope this is helpful

  • jhoey01 Dec 09, 2010

Tried new batteries and took console off to check switch and circuit board. All was good. Called the 800 number. They had me check the connection to the TV. The connection is behind a plastic panel. I removed the panel. The connections all "looked" good. But when I removed and reconnected the RCA connectors, it all started working just fine. Apparently if the connectors are not all firmly attached to the TV posts, the smart cycle will not turn on. The 800 number has a number of tricks to try before you disassemble the console or start attaching external power supplies when the problem can be as simple as a loose connection to the TV.

  • Sara Paulsen Sep 24, 2014

yes and for us I had to connect it through the VCR niether the tv nor the cable box connections worked eventhough they were tightly connected.....finicky little sob.

We are on our second one and are having a different problem.
It will work for a while and then when the kid hops on again to play we only get sound and no image on screen.
We had the same issue with the first one.

We just had this problem. After replacing the batteries, still had the same problem. Found that the plug in on the front of the cycle was loose. Still looked plugged in but I guess was just loose enough to malfunction. Pushed plug tighter and works fine now.

  • Melinda123 Jul 14, 2011

Ours did this and the plug in on the front of the cycle was just loose enough to malfunction. Tightened plug and works fine.

Before you call the phone number above or take out seven screws, try changing the batteries. Our system was powering off and it turns out that is a function of older batteries.

I had a similar issue. My Smart Cycle worked for a while, then it progressively became more and more temperamental, failing at unusual times, not turning on consistently, then finally quit powering on entirely. Turns out there was dirt & grime (maybe a little corrosion) on the game cartridge and plug. The solution -- clean with Windex and q-tips.
