This problem is peculiar. First concerning the sound, the audio driver on hp site doesnt work, u need to download the universal audio architecture (UAA) driver ( try this site: http://driverscollection.com/?H=Pavilion%20dv1000&By=HP). This is the driver u need before the sound will work.
Secondly when my laptop began to shut down on its own, i discovered it was a fan problem. The processor fan would seize causing the processor to over heat and consequently causing the system to shut down. Fortunately I repair pcs so i was able to bring out the fan, work on it and my system is behaving fine now. Alternatively you could take it to a repair shop and have the processor fan replaced, that will the the darn thing to stop shutting down after some minutes.

Goto the hp site http://www.hp.com there you will find all the drivers you require.there are more than one lot of drivers for audio so download them all ,one of them is right for you,the same with other drivers.if theres more than one driver and youre not sure which one you need ; download them all.
problem with pc turning off ....right click in desktop and select properties and check power settings in screensaver properties...there youll find config for hibernation, lid switch, sleep mode etc....

While installing sound drivers on your HP laptops the first and the most important thing that you will have to consider is its compatibility.
A sound driver that you choose needs to be compatible with your PCs Operating System and the sound card installed on your HP Laptop.
Then, in case if you fail to choose the right driver, the installation will fail and you will not get the expected quality.
Thus, while downloading drivers from the website try to download the drivers that are compatible with your systems sound card.

I have the same problem when my friends ask for my help re installing his pavilion dv1000 because a HD crash.
After installing windows in the first partition, leaving behind about 40 gb of the HD, i started to install the quickplay app.
1. I leave the 40 gb unchange, unformat - it didn't work
2. I create 204 mb of primary partition - it didn't work
3. I create 212 mb of EXTENDED PARTITION - unformat and leave the rest ( 40 gn - 212 Mb ).
Try to install the quickplay ...and it works..
The quick plqy app. formatted 204 MB next to my 212 extended partition.
Because i'm too lazy to try another shot, i leave the 212 extended partition, 204 of quickplay formatted partition unchange - and used the next sector to create partition for data.
Hope this information can help.

Check the bottom of the notebook, some dv1000 models were CTO and had for some reason a second model number, in my case it was http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=3191023#
for this model there was a second download for a microsoft UMM bus driver that needed to be installed, after that the problem was fixed
