Before you downloaded the drivers, did you have the DeskJet unplugged from the computer? (USB cable)

DeskJet was off, and unplugged from power source? (Surge protector)

If a hardware device, (such as that HP DeskJet peripheral), is attached via the USB cable, (Power provided, and unit turned on), AND THE drivers are not present, Windows hurries over, and matches Generic drivers.

Windows will try to match one of it's thousands of generic drivers.
This = Doesn't Work!

You need THE drivers for that HP DeskJet installed, Before you attach the DeskJet to the computer, (Via USB cable), and Before the printer is turned On.
(Drivers are in the Full Feature Software)

To download the software to install the printer click on the Following Link:

Select your OS;
Select the Full feature Driver;
Click on Download ;
Save to your desktop;
and then run the software;
Then while installation select the "Recommended" option and install it;

Even if you do not have CD Installer, that's alright. Hp do have an option where you could go to their website and download all the driver's without any cost. If you wish, you could also prepare a CD Installer by burning the Driver's in a disc ( Only for personal use ).

Select your O.S ( Operating System ) like Windows Vista, 98 or so.

Save the files on the desktop in a Single Folder. Double click those to install in your PC/Notebook.
