Sata vs ide

I have a IDE hard drive and a SATA hard drive. I want my SATA hd to be my primary drive and the IDE as storage. Does the SATA hd need a jumper? or the IDE? When I get to the bios screen it tells me to boot from a cd then when I boot from the XP pro CD it ask me which drive. I pick a drive then it looks like it is installing but then it restarts.

Re: sata vs ide

SATA can only have one drive per channel so it does not need a jumper. Most SATA connections and such can been turned and modified on the BIOS screen. The BIOS may be where you can choose which one is the master or not. I know there are some computers that can have different types of drives. The SATA usually is the master(primary) and the PATA/IDE would be the secondary drives. You might have a problem with Transfer speed of the drive as well. I would see if you can drop the transfer rate to 1.5 Gb/s on the SATA. You computer may only support that and not SATA II 3.0 Gb/s. Hitachi has a great program to do that called Feature Tools, I am sure other hard drive manufactures have a way to do that on theirs too. I have only had to do it on Hitachi's for my self.

A sata drive doesn't need jumpers. The jumpers were only required when 2 drives used the same cable.

Unable to make SATA dive as primary master .

Remove the IDE hard drive, and connect the SATA drive to SATA0 (zero) port. Install the OS on SATA drive. You may have to check BIOS. F2 on boot should get you there.

Unpluged small ribbon cable from mother board installing hard drive need to know where it plugs in

If it's an IDE cable it goes into the IDE 0 or IDE 1 on the motherboard.
It's your primary drive so it should go into the lowest number.

If it's an sata drive the and it's your primary drive it goes into the lowest numbered sata port on the motherboard.

How to install 2 t hard drive in computer compaq

A 2Tb hard disk will be a SATA hard drive. If your PC Desktop does not have a SATA disk controller then your have a couple of options.

1. Insert a SATA controller card into the PCI expansion slot, mount the SATA hard drive inside the PC case and then connect the SATA hard drive to the controller (you will also need a 4 pin power to SATA adapter cable) and install the SATA controller driver.

2. The other option (and the easiest) is to purchase an external USB 2Tb hard drive. All you need to do is, plug it into the USB port of your computer and it will see it as an external storage device.

Ive built my first pc and all went well until the message no hard drive detected comes on all parts are new so any help would be great in fixing this thanks dave

Verify that the hard disk is connected on both data and power cables and is receiving power (it hums at startup); also that the proper EIDE or SATA slot on the motherboard is used, and properly jumpered (e.g. a SATA 2 disk on a SATA 1 configured port is likely to malfunction).

Check that the BIOS is configured to autodetect the hard disk type, and is using the appropriate adapter (EIDE or SATA port), without RAID options or such.

In a pinch, try also ignoring the motherboard labels (e.g., plug the hard disk on the fourth SATA port instead of the first -- the mobo numbering is not always the "logical" one, even if it usually should be.

in most PCs the MB and cables inside will have provision to add

2 HDDs
2 Drives (CD or DVD)
1 floppy drive(now it's obsolete)

in a IDE system the data cables inside will be aprox 3 inch wide and the MB will have 2 IDE slots to fix the cables....
in a SATA system the data cables inside will be aprox 1 inch wide and the MB will have 4 SATA slots to fix the cables....from 2 HDD and 2 Disk Drives....

you should know how to install a new HD and make it primary or slave depending on which HD has your OS...
google and find more details on that...
