if this is a new dishwasher it could have some plastic caught around the drain screen from packaging or if it dumps though a disposal and the disposal is new there is a little black plug that must be removed before the water will pass through the plug has to be removed with a hammer and a screwdriver the plug is located inside where the drain hose hooks to the disposal hope this helps

Hello. Are you using liquid or powdered soap? In some models liquid soap will foam up and the drain motor can't pump out bubbles. Foaming can also happen if you pre-clean your dishes with liquid soap used for washing by hand. If it is foaming, you can poor non-dairy creamer or cooking oil into the bottom of the unit while it is in the wash cycle.
If foaming isn't a problem then the water level switch may be bad, the pump may be not pumping out as quickly as it should or you may need to take the hose off completely to make double sure that there isn't anything in it.
Did you check the air-gap next to your kitchen sink faucet. If you don't have an air-gap it may be hooked up to the garbage disposal and if you don't have a high loop in your drain hose the water can run back into the dishwasher especially if the disposal backs up.
